"Since You Are Here, You May as Well Wind the Clock..."
By R. M. Fisher
Joan Aiken is one of my favourite authors, best known among children as the writer of the alternative-history series that contains titles such as The Wolves of Willoughby Chase (The Wolves Chronicles), Black Hearts in Battersea and Nightbirds on Nantucket. She is also a writer for adults, and the same sense of imagination, wit and mystery found in her earlier books are found in this collected anthology of creepy and twisted short stories. Although the title claims that these are stories of "horror, suspense and fantasy," this is a little misleading. It's not that these stories aren't any of these things, it's just that Aiken does not write typical short stories in this genre - these tales are seldom wrapped up in a neat little bow, and often Aiken is more interested in crafting an unsettling atmosphere than answering questions that her stories raise. As such, many of the stories do not seem particularly creepy , and those who are used to their horror stories being filled with blood, gore and screaming ghosts may feel somewhat bewildered as to how a falling cat, a laughing clock and ceramic puppets are supposed to be scary. But mature readers, who knows that there is something terrifying in ordered life cracking under inexplicable madness (often presented in achingly ordinary objects) will definitely feel the promised touch of chill.

"Lodgers", a dark and disturbing story about a frazzled working mother who has an elderly couple lodge in her home whilst her children are sick. Trying to juggle her work, her children and the presence of the lodgers, she can't help but be suspicious at the odd behaviour of Mr and Mrs Colegate - their interest in her children, the odd white shapes in their bedroom, the creepy marionettes they collect, and the snatches of bizarre conversation she hears between them.

"Mrs Considine" concerns the friendship between this elderly woman and her young ward Julia. Mrs Considine is an avowed atheist, and Julia has several odd (and, as it turns out, prophetic dreams) about the people in her community. What do her dreams have to say about Mrs Considine? This is a short, strange, but oddly sweet story about a young girl's perception of the world and its people.

"The Sewanee Glide" is a darkly comedic story about two elderly feuding sisters, a deceased husband whose memory still lingers on in the rapidly falling-apart manor house and a bag of poisoned walnuts. The first of several stories that Aiken devotes to the motivations behind murder and the ease with which the assailant gets away with it.

"Listening", one of the more obscure stories in the collection, in which several seemingly unrelated events are wrapped up in one man's day, in a way that is too complex on some thematic level for this particular reader to fathom. In a single day, Professor Middlemass witnesses a lecture on listening to sounds, three mistreated cats and a disturbing collage in an art gallery with his name on it. What does all this mean? I have no idea. Ask someone smarter.

"The Companion" is a ghost story that follows a more familiar pattern; Mrs Clyrard finds an odd sense of happiness in her troublesome cottage, till the day she expects it has become inhabited by a ghost. Calling in an exorcist, she's relieved to feel the presence leave her home. But who was the ghost? And where is it now?

"The Rented Swan" is the most lighthearted story in the collection, more like a contemporary fairytale than anything else, concerning a young writer who rents an elegant flat - complete with a butler and a swan. Yes, I said a swan.

"The Jugged Hare", is probably my least favourite in the collection, about two people having an affair and a jealous husband who practices archery. You can probably tell where this one is going...unfortunately, Aiken doesn't actually go there - ending the story with the plotting of murder, and not the murder itself.

"A Game of Black and White" is another obscure and bizarre story that defies my understanding, though it is filled with compelling images, including eclipses, graveyards, dentists, black tulips, and a creepy doppelganger. I can't make heads or tails of it - but I still like it, certainly a lot more than her other surrealist story, the aforementioned "Listening".

"Time to Laugh" - out of curiosity, Matt decides to break into an abandoned house to see what's inside. He's delighted to find a clock that tells the time by laughing, and horrified to discover that the chair-bound old woman still inhabits the house. Still, he's not too concerned...till he discovers that he's securely locked in the house with her. This is one of the creepiest stories here, and goes well with "Power-Cut."

"He" is definitely my favourite story, concerning a young girl's sea voyage from Poland to America and her meeting with a witch on board. After old Mrs Polander is severely injured by a careless boy, young Gisela inherits a strange box from her - and decides to use it to take revenge on the boy.

"The Story About Caruso" is the third story about the murder of a family member - this time it's a woman who has her deceased husband's uncle come to stay with her. But how long can she stand his ineffectual housekeeping, his nasty attempts at cooking, and the endless retellings of his old-time stories?

"The Helper" is a well crafted story of mysterious death and ongoing bitterness between two families that would switch daughters for the holidays. Seven years after the death of his daughter, Mr Frost returns to the house of Charles-Edouard Aveyrand to help him with a patent for a new invention: a robotic figure that automatically turns lights on and off. With the grim past pressing down on him (portions of which Aiken purposefully leaves obscure), Frost can't help but procrastinate in the task of helping Aveyrand make money - after all, he holds Aveyrand's daughter responsible for *his* daughter's death. But the odd invention isn't so easily put aside...

"Power-Cut" is the second full-out scary story of the bunch, concerning a warring married couple that returns to their small holiday cottage after the death of their son Simon. Mr Michaels had despised his loutish, spoilt son who was responsible for his blindness, and returning to the cottage only intensifies his bitterness. According to his wife there is a power-cut, and she leaves to fetch candles. But if there is a power-cut, then how come Mr Michaels can hear the messages left on the answering machine, including one from his dead son...

"Who Goes Down this Dark Road?" is another darkly amusing story, about a young girl who believes that she has a tribe of Gauls living in her hair. For a six year old, her knowledge on the subject is remarkable, and she relates the message that a catastrophe is coming...

"A Train Full of War-Lords" features another blind man in a broken family, and what everyone can get up to under the nose of someone who cannot see. This one is completely void of any supernatural tone, but is creepy enough in the range of familial secrets and bitterness that fester within what seems to be a perfectly ordinary home.

Despite the fact that some stories are preferable to others, Aiken writes beautifully, often frightening the reader with what she *doesn't* say - the eerie silences and gaps in information help creates stories in which the characters teeter on the edge of reality, poised to fall into madness. She has a keen eye for dialogue and the dark side of human nature (at a wedding: "Julia thought she had never known before that an atmosphere could be so bright and glittering with hate") and there is an appealing sense of "Englishness" throughout all the stories - plenty of cups of tea, British landmarks, names like `Luffington' and `Thorneycroft' and even an aversion to Irishmen. Altogether, this is a compelling and creepy set of stories - though subtle enough that it needs a serious amount of effort on the part of the reader to fully understand and explore the nightmarish tone that permeates (most of) them.

the cover is misleading
By Lucie Melahn
If you're approaching Joan Aiken stories as horror stories, you'll be disappointed. the beauty of her writing is that she takes the ordinary and gives it a fantasy twist. Totally worth it for the slightly twisted young adult reader.

A Touch of Chill, a Dash of Interest, Loads of Off-the-Wall
By rampageous_cuss
The Touch of Chill in this collection is mostly provided by the short story "The Lodgers" - that and "Power Cut" were the only stories I think really work as horror stories. Although Aiken was a beautiful stylist, most of the stories are not well constructed, and have the feel of having been thrown off in a hurry for sale to some magazine (which admittedly is part of why "The Lodgers" works.) Several stories ("The Cat Flap and the Apple Pie," "MouseWork," "Elephant's Ear," "Who Goes Down This Dark Road," and "The Sewanee Glide") are obviously intended to be comic, without quite working for me, anyway. Others ("Sailor's Legends" and "She Was Afraid of Upstairs") are mawkish and sentimental. "A Game of Black and White" (a kind of dream sequence) and "Listening" (a philosophical consideration of awareness and connections) were interesting and entertaining, but the supposed chillers "He," "A Time To Laugh," "The Birthday Party," and "A Long Way To Swim" didn't work for me - they weren't suspenseful, or the left-to-your-imagination endings weren't preceded by enough build-up, or they were predictable.

The stories in this particular edition are:

THE CAT FLAP AND THE APPLE PIE: expecting unwelcome visitors on the last day of summer vacation, members of a family want to escape, and one does in a VERY unusual way.

"HE": the vengeful use of magic leads to lasting, if mild, regret.

TIME TO LAUGH: an adventurous hooligan finds himself trapped in an old house with lots of champagne and a sick old woman.

LODGERS: hoping for someone to keep an eye on her sick children, an overworked mother accepts lodgers whose odd practices aren't healthy for anyone.

LISTENING: after hearing a lecture on the connection between music and everyday noise, a professor discovers strange connections in his ordinary life.

SAILORS' LEGENDS: a castaway discovers peaceful harmony ashore, but is he ready to give up the sea?

A GAME OF BLACK AND WHITE: hoping to avoid embarrassment on his birthday, a young boy finds he must perform the right ritual during a solar eclipse to repair his reversed world.

ELEPHANT'S EAR: two traveling department-store buyers try to carry out strange obligations, leading one to her heart's desire.

THE SEWANEE GLIDE: a couple of adventurous hooligans provide an elderly spinster with the means to free herself from a lifetime of being bossed around.

SHE WAS AFRAID OF UPSTAIRS: a girl with a strange obsession learns the secret of her fear.

THE BIRTHDAY PARTY: a spoiled and willful child discovers that an inappropriate present has ideas she finds appropriate.

MOUSEWORK: A castaway finds herself on an island of intelligent mice, and has adventures in keeping their secret.

A LONG WAY TO SWIM: two survivors of an alien invasion must keep the pedal from the metal in order to reach a refuge off the coast.

WHO GOES DOWN THIS DARK ROAD? : a professor learns the bizarre truth of the premonition of a girl with a strange obsession.

POWER CUT: attempting to reconcile with his estranged wife after their son's death, a blind man is bedeviled by bitter memories of the spoiled and willful boy.

Research and Evaluation in Education and Psychology: Integrating Diversity With Quantitative, Qualitative, and Mixed Methods, by Donna M.

Focused on increasing the credibility of research and evaluation, the Fourth Edition of Donna M. Mertens’s comprehensive Research and Evaluation in Education and Psychology: Integrating Diversity with Quantitative, Qualitative, and Mixed Methods incorporates the viewpoints of various research paradigms into its descriptions of these methods. Providing specific advice on conducting research in culturally complex communities, the new edition has been updated to align with the American Psychological Association and the National Council of Accreditation of Teacher Education accreditation requirements. Approximately sixty percent of the content in the Fourth Edition is new, updated with numerous contemporary examples, making this book one of the most comprehensive, accessible, and practical methods books available.

Praise for the previous edition:

“The organization of the text reflects the author’s intent, philosophy, and objectives . . . [Mertens] clearly presents approaches, descriptions, and many examples useful in conducting studies; she is to be commended for the thoroughness of her work.”

—Frank D. Adams, Wayne State College

“Excellent descriptions, definitions, examples, and narrative about social science theory and the various paradigms. Mertens’ use [of] a wide variety of social identities to provide her examples makes the text inclusive of a variety of diverse identities. It is also useful to see the differences between [research and evaluation] and to select methods appropriate to the intention of the inquiry.”

Review
“The organization of the text reflects the author’s intent, philosophy, and objectives . . . [Mertens] clearly presents approaches, descriptions, and many examples useful in conducting studies; she is to be commended for the thoroughness of her work.” (Frank D. Adams, Wayne State College)

“Very comprehensive for beginning doctoral students . . . I wish more authors recognized the importance of addressing diverse perspectives and approaches.” (Linda A. Pursley, Lesley University)

“As a researcher, the presentation offers a fresh approach. It is critical to look at research from a transformative paradigm. Most methods texts do not even attempt to do this.” (Cynthia J. MacGregor, Missouri State University)

“Excellent descriptions, definitions, examples, and narrative about social science theory and the various paradigms. Mertens [first] breaks these challenging concepts into increments and then continues to use the paradigmatic language throughout the text. This allows students new to the material to contextualize methodology, method, and paradigm . . . This is useful as students grapple with understanding how each of these tenets differs and how they are interconnected. This text does the best job in explaining these challenging theories. Mertens’ use [of] a wide variety of social identities to provide her examples makes the text inclusive of a variety of diverse identities. It is also useful to see the differences between [research and evaluation] and to select methods appropriate to the intention of the inquiry.” (Katrina L. Rodriguez, University of Northern Colorado)

About the Author

Donna M. Mertens is Professor in the Department of Education at Gallaudet University. She teaches research methods and program evaluation to deaf and hearing students at the MA and PhD levels.

She conducts research and evaluation studies on such topics as improvement of special education services in international settings, planning for the inclusion of students with disabilities in neighborhood schools, enhancing the educational experiences of students with disabilities, preventing sexual abuse in residential schools for deaf students, improving access to the court systems for deaf and hard-of-hearing people, and improving the preparation of teachers of the deaf through appropriate use of instructional technology. Her research focuses on improving methods of inquiry by integrating the perspectives of those who have experienced oppression in our society. She draws on the writings of feminists, racial and ethnic minorities, people with disabilities, as well as indigenous peoples who have addressed the issues of power and oppression and their implications for research methodology.

Dr. Mertens has made numerous presentations at the meetings of the American Educational Research Association, American Evaluation Association, Association for College Educators of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing, International Sociological Association, International Mixed Methods Conference, American Psychological Association, African Evaluation Association, Canadian Evaluation Society, Visitors Studies Association, and other organizations that explore these themes. She served as president and board member of the American Evaluation Association from 1997 to 2002 and as a member of the Board of Trustees for the International Organization for Cooperation in Evaluation, 2002–2003. She is the editor for the Journal of Mixed Methods Research (with Max Bergman as coeditor).

Comprehensive Text, Diverse Methodology
By Mary Wendell
Donna Merten is definitely one of those educators that is a researcher at heart. In her own research studies over the years she found that pieces of the puzzle were missing and began looking into, as she says in her introduction, "principles of qualitative approaches to get a more complete understanding."

So often texts like Research and Evaluation in Education and Psychology are too focused on a single idea and fail to acknowledge broader paradigms. This one manages to avoid that trap. Merten delves deep into what research is and what the steps are for successful, well-rounded research and evaluation. To accomplish this she uses sample studies, narratives, and examples as well as foundation information like terms and definitions. I can't say that this book is exactly a one-stop-shop as it presents itself, so do make sure to supplement the text with a thorough look at the statistics of psychology, like Clinical Versus Statistical Prediction: A Theoretical Analysis and a Review of the Evidence.

Anyone going into a related field will appreciate Merten's inclusion of diverse perspectives and approaches as well as studies related to underrepresented communities. Integrating these perspectives and approaches is really the best way to improve methods of inquiry. The writing itself may be somewhat dry and a little tough to get through at times, but the information gained will be worth the extra effort.

Libro de Psicologia
By Y. M. Rosario

Two of America's most talented activists team up to deliver a bold and hilarious satire of modern environmental policy in this fully illustrated graphic novel. The U.S. government gives robot machines from space permission to eat the earth in exchange for bricks of gold. A one-eyed bunny rescues his friends from a corporate animal-testing laboratory. And two little girls figure out the secret to saving the world from both of its enemies (and it isn't by using energy-efficient light bulbs or biodiesel fuel). As the World Burns will inspire you to do whatever it takes to stop ecocide before it’s too late.

From School Library Journal
Grade 10 Up–This simply drawn graphic satire is largely message-driven, but the message is still entertaining and thought-provoking. As the lighthearted lead character shares what governments, corporations, and activists tell individual Americans to do to save the Earth, her cynical counterpart exposes the futility of these simple solutions. The truth is, even if each and every one of us switched to compact fluorescent bulbs and became vegetarians it would only be a drop in the bucket compared to the damage corporate and government policies are doing to the world environment. The story that binds these notions together is an upcoming alien invasion and a renegade bunny trying to end animal experimentation. The characters are crudely drawn with bare sets, but this style works in a tale in which the words are carrying so much weight. (The politicians have sharper teeth than the bears.) This book doesn't offer up any real answers to what is clearly portrayed as a frightening state of affairs–it includes an animal uprising. However, it will inflame teens' passion about the environment and possibly open more eyes.–Jamie Watson, Harford County Public Library, MD

Review

"McMillan's expressive style, pared down to the basics and intensified over the years, allows for instant communication of thoughtful rage. . . a fast-moving page-turner."–The Comics Journal

"In As the World Burns the large scope and indictment of every facet of society is, to say the least, thought-provoking."–Cleveland Free Times

"Readers exasperated with, or just plain tired of, simplistic guides offering purportedly quick and easy ways to resolve global warming and other momentous concerns of the day will delight in this razor-sharp critique packaged as a cute-kid-and-funny-animal cartoon... Jensen and McMillan roll critical thinking and well-structured graphic-novel storytelling into a compelling whole."–Booklist

"A compelling message and an expressive artwork."–The Sylvanian

"As the product of the creative marriage of activist philosopher Derrick Jensen and political cartoonist Stephanie McMillan, As the World Burns displays trademark qualities of both professions:the big ideas and calculated statistics of Jensen's and the witticism and quirky characterization of McMillan's."–World Literature Today

"A sharply worded satire that delivers a litany of reasons why our culture's alienation from the wild is literally paving the way to global destruction."–North Coast Journal

"Jensen takes the complexity of anti-civilization philosophy and distills it down to one important message. If we can't stop destroying everything, soon we’ll have destroyed everything."–Slingshot

"In As The World Burns, satire bites through the sharp vampire-pointed teeth of McMillan's corporate overlords...initially, the graphic novel's underlying message may seem heavy-handed and preachy, but the writing is so acutely entertaining that the message doesn't feel force-fed...Plus, the drawings are so darn cute."–Broward/Palm Beach New Times

Bunny Terror Alert
By doomsdayer520
The anarcho-primitive activist and post-civilization philosopher Derrick Jensen really knows how to make an impact. Readers who agree with his general philosophy need not agree with every single one of his positions, though you can't deny that he's very effective at advancing them with deft use of persuasion and polemics. This tongue-in-cheek graphic novel came as a bit of a surprise, because I assumed that the "stay in denial" portion of the title would be directed at anti-environmentalists. On the contrary, the book is actually directed at environmentalists who have fallen for popular rhetoric about how their individual actions (recycling, buying new light bulbs, driving a hybrid, etc.) may actually make a major difference in the health of the planet. I don't totally agree with Jensen's disdain for personal virtue, but it's hard to deny that casual environmentalism detracts attention from the true causes of the world's problems. The status quo in business, economics, and politics is the real problem, and to save the planet we might just need a revolutionary structural overhaul of modern civilization. While this fictional story is simplistic and a bit forced, and comes nowhere near the intelligence and emotion of Jensen's other works, as an entertaining graphic novel the message is quite compelling. The low-key but expressive artwork of political cartoonist Stephanie McMillan surely adds to the effect. Perhaps this type of quick-hitting storytelling, rather than lengthy technical and philosophical screeds, will inspire caring folks to take real action. [~doomsdayer520~]

"Stop insisting on your growth economy, on acquiring more and more until you consume the entire planet."
By Jessica Lux
Derrick Jensen and Stephanie McMillan's As the World Burns is a revolutionary graphic novel decrying the failure of the green movement. We have become a self-congratulatory society of "green" consumers, recyclers, yogi mediators, and letter-writers. Utilizing pigtailed girls, a one-eyed eco-revolutionary bunny, and a wise bird, the authors expose the fallacies of patting ourselves on the back as we continue down an unsustainable consumption path headed straight for world destruction. Some quick math performed by Kranti (a character from McMillan's Minimum Security cartoon) reveals that even if everyone (100% of the US population) changed our light bulbs, recycled half our total waste, cut our driving in half, installed low-flow showerheads, and adjusted our thermostats by two degrees, the end results would be a ONE-TIME 21% reduction in carbon emissions, which given our current rate of growth, would be offset in 10 years.

The real culprits in our ecocide? Corporations and the government they have in their pockets. And what are they doing? Running marketing campaigns and releasing movies to convince individual consumers to take the blame. In As the World Burns, a former-politician-turned-activist conspires with corporations to distract individuals from the systemic predicament, knowing full well that green consumers will pay more to feel good about themselves.

As the World Burns is much more than sharp dialogue about the futility of eco-friendly consumerism. Aliens have also arrived on the planet, intent on eating up all Earth's resources, and expecting to have to fight the planet's current residents. To their surprise, the Bible-thumping Dad-worshipping President gladly gives away the planet in exchange for bars of gold, which the aliens know is absolutely useless, not even giving the humans a buzz, but they go gaga for it. The plot thickens even farther as a pill-pushing therapist tries to medicate away our heroine's societal discontent, the one-eyed Bunnista starts his own campaign to free tortured animals, and the government locks bunnies and any suspected bunny sympathizers in terrorist detention centers.

The authors of As the World Burns argue that modern industrial society is inherently unsustainable, requiring a no-compromise stance from activists who truly want to change the direction of the global population. In the novel, a raccoon advises, "Stop insisting on your growth economy, on acquiring more and more until you consume the entire planet." We can no longer ignore the natural world, but as the wise bird educates us, humans lived in harmony with nature for thousands of years and could learn to again if we were willing.

Someone had to say it
By Howard M. Switzer
Another excellent work from Derrick Jensen. The so-called green movement is being co-opted by the very mega corporations who are doing the destroying of the planet. They make the big decisions, they rig the elections, they own the mass media and public mind control technologies, they control the economy, the money and they will not stop. Al Gore described part of the problem and told us what we can do, but Derrick does the math. If every man woman and child did them all, and they never would, it only adds up to 21% of the carbon that the US spews. The rest comes from the mega industries and their carbon spew increases about 2% per year so that savings won't last long. Buying green products will not save the planet. We need to find a way for people to understand that they are being bamboozled so they can step into their own power. For those who will say this book is short on solutions I say that is because there really isn't going to be any solution until a lot of people quit believing all the green-wash hype. How we get everyone talking to one another and getting out of our mass denial, so we can do something effective, is the project that we need to focus on. Derrick has described what we are denying, now we have work to do. We see the enemy and it is us, ...but mostly its them.

Independent-minded Sibylla Spencer feels trapped in nineteenth-century London, where her strong will and progressive views have rendered her unmarriageable. Still single at twenty-three, she is treated like a child and feels stifled in her controlling father’s house.

When Benjamin Hopkins, an ambitious employee of her father’s trading company, shows an interest in her, she realizes marriage is her only chance to escape. As Benjamin’s rising career whisks them both away to exotic Morocco, Sibylla is at last a citizen of the world, reveling in her newfound freedom by striking her first business deals, befriending locals…and falling in love for the first time with a charismatic and handsome Frenchman.

But Benjamin’s lust for money and influence draws him into dark dealings, pulling him ever further from Sibylla and their two young sons. When he’s arrested on horrible charges, the fate of Sibylla’s family rests on her shoulders, as she must decide whether she’ll leave him to his fate or help him fight for his life.

Interesting and well researched...
By NicShef❤️Reading
The Lioness of Morocco is an incredibly interesting story and a well-researched book - I have to admit I was intrigued by the cover and the book synopsis when I was offered it as an ARC. That being said, what I really appreciated about the book is its lovely descriptions of Moroccan culture especially from the perspective of the lives of women in harems. It may be Very different to anything I've read before - but quite transcendental.

This book is about Sibylla Spencer, the daughter of a wealthy merchant, who has aspirations of travelling the world. Of course, set in the 1800's, Sibylla is too modern thinking for her time. At the very ripe age of 23 years old Sibylla decides to take matters into her own hands and find a husband who won’t try to dominate her....Enter Benjamin Hopkins, her father’s shady purchasing agent who will do anything to improve his position in life.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Set largely in Morocco, the story follows the exploits of Sibylla, as she and her husband, Benjamin, live in Morocco during the 1800s. Get ready for an emotional ride following Sibylla on her many adventures! She becomes a powerful businesswoman rubbing elbows with the very powerful and maneuvering lucrative deals with Moroccan Sheikhs.

Sibylla morphs into an incredible woman - amazing mother and later grandmother ... doing the best she can for her family and friends. This book includes love, loss, secrets, and drama spread over more than twenty years... It is intense reading at times and I am not sure of the historical accuracies but nonetheless I think this is a solid 4.5 Stars.
I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Romance and Suspense in an Exotic World
By Kristin B.
3 1/2 Stars

When I looked through the Kindle First selections for May, I had a hard time choosing a book because a couple of them appealed to me. I typically choose books in the historical fiction, contemporary fiction, and romance genres but I will branch out and try others as well. I was drawn to The Lioness of Morocco because it's considered historical fiction and I was intrigued by the setting so, after a lot of hemming and hawing, I decided to buy it.

The Lioness of Morocco is a historical fiction/romance set in the mid 1800s in London in the beginning and later in Mogador, Morocco (currently known as Essaouira). Sibylla Spencer is a 23-year-old single woman whose father owns Spencer & Son Shipping Company. During this time period, it's rare for a woman to still be unmarried and she is a force to be reckoned with. She prefers to think for herself but eventually agrees to marry Benjamin Hopkins, one of her father's employees, even though she doesn't love him. When Benjamin is transferred to Mogador, she discovers a world unlike anything she has ever known and the power of family, love, and secrets.

I'll admit, when I first started this book, I found it hard to get into. It didn't immediately draw me in and I felt it was hard to connect with the characters because they lacked depth. Eventually, I got into the story more because I am intrigued by the Moroccan setting. Because of this, it took me awhile to read it and I finished it last night but decided to give myself more time before reviewing it to process my thoughts.

I really enjoyed the setting and the combination of historical fiction, romance, and suspense. There are a few sensual parts that are descriptive (in case that bothers you) but I don't feel those overshadow the story enough to distract the reader. My biggest problem, and the reason I had trouble connecting with the characters, is the lack of depth of the characters. Though they had some feelings, it didn't seem like they had a lot and I couldn't feel the romance, passions, what makes them tick, etc. like I usually can if characters are well-developed. Since this book was originally written in German and translated into English, perhaps those were lost in translation or maybe some novels written in different languages are typically written in that style. Either way, I thought the translation was good and I didn't have any trouble following along with the story.

Overall, I liked the story but found it hard to get into and to really get to know the characters. I liked the setting and most of the events and even felt like I could picture the town of Mogador. I debated between a three and four star rating for a long time and finally decided on a 3 1/2 star rating. I liked it but it's not a book I'd read again and it didn't draw me in like I'd hoped.

Preserving the Nation: The Conservation and Environmental Movements 1870 - 2000, by Thomas R. Wellock

In the popular imagination, the roots of environmentalism lie in actions undertaken at the beginning of the twentieth century to conserve the nation’s natural resources and preserve its scenic wonders. To some extent, those who have chronicled environmentalism have reinforced this perception, often writing about the heroes who helped create national parks and save forests rather than considering fundamental trends. Although most make some mention of reformers who stressed curbing pollution and urban clean-up in the period after 1945, environmental histories rarely integrate the three strands of the movement into one comprehensive study.

In Preserving the Nation, Thomas Wellock explores the international, rural, and industrial roots of modern environmentalism that emerged in the last half of the nineteenth century—three related movements in response to a rapidly expanding economy and population that depleted the nation’s resources, damaged land in rural areas, and blighted cities. The first group favored the conservation and efficient management of natural resources for production. The second, the preservationists, sought to protect scenic and wilderness areas and to sustain the spirit of the nation’s pioneer heritage and virility. The third group, the urban environmentalists, sought reform to control industrial pollution and retard urban decay. Politically powerful and widely admired, resource management overshadowed the other two movements until the 1950s. After World War II, the two less-powerful strands of the movement, preservationism and urban environmentalism, wove into one, as the accelerating effects of affluence, scientific discovery, Cold War concerns, and suburbanization led the public to value outdoor amenities and a healthy environment. This renamed “environmental” movement focused less on efficient use of resources and more on creating healthy ecosystems and healthy people free of risks from pollution and hazardous wastes. By 1970, environmentalism enjoyed widespread popular support and bipartisan appeal.

What all three movements always shared was a common recognition of the limits of America’s natural resources and environment, a belief in preserving them for generations to come, and a faith in at least some government environmental action rather than relying purely on private solutions. Not only does the history of these movements bring to light much about the expanding role of government in environmental regulation and the growth of the modern American state, but a look at environmental campaigns over the course of the twentieth century reveals a great deal about the racial, gender, and class divisions at work in the ongoing efforts to preserve the environment.

Accessible, insightful, and highly affordable, Preserving the Nation makes an ideal core text for use in courses in Environmental History as well as thought-provoking supplemental reading for Twentieth-century America and the U.S. survey.

"Preserving the Nation is by far the best survey we have of the history of environmental activism. Wellock has a knack for getting to the heart of issues. This should be a great book for students. And for scholars -- even though I'm familiar with almost all of the works he draws on, Wellock taught me a lot!"

I have a list of overviews of the American environmental movement in the inside flap of a book I'm reading-- I think there must be a dozen so far.

but it's good to note, as this author does, that there isn't just ONE environmental movement, but many, all of which confusingly refer to themselves as THE green or environmental movement.

Here's a review excerpt:
"Wellock does not present any new or striking arguments in his study; what is new is the synthesis of scholarship from the past few decades into an overall narrative detailing the rise of the conservation and environmental movements. Much of the findings in this book will not be new to environmental historians, but instead this study serves as an updated textbook of sorts for younger scholars and students of environmental history. Preserving the Nation is a fairly short, compact book that reads well and will be useful for classes in environmental history, or as a succinct refresher for more experienced scholars."

I'd summarize this as a 4 star review, so that's what I gave it.
