"Wicked people are full of darkness."

Anna Fekete is a new hire in the Finnish police department's Violent Crime Unit. She is originally from Hungary and is a survivor of the Serbo-Croatian war. She immigrated to Finland with her mother and brother when she was a child. She speaks fluent Finnish and English, along with several other languages. This book begins as she starts her job in the violent crime unit and is partnered up with Esko, a racist, prejudiced drunk. She questions if she can bear spending time with this taciturn, unpleasant man who does not speak to her and covers the alcohol on his breath with mints.

Shortly after she begins her job, a jogger is murdered by a shotgun blast to the head. This murder is followed by two others and the police are now seeking a serial killer, a rarity in Finland. Anna is a great cop but she has a tendency towards depression and insomnia. She once served in the Finnish army and was a good jogger but lately she spends her time channel surfing and smoking cigarettes. She has a brother named Akos who she has not seen in several years. He is an alcoholic and addict and she decides to make contact with him which causes her more problems.

There are no real leads on the case except that a small necklace is left in the pocket of each victim. The necklace is an Aztec symbol for a powerful and wrathful god. The only other connection between the victims is that they are killed while they are out for a run in the evening.

Anna is also intrigued by another case, that of a Kurdish high school student who has called the police emergency number asking for help. When the call is responded to, the girl says that she dialed the number by mistake. Anna doesn't believe her and thinks that the girl is in danger. She decides, on her own, to watch the family and to see what is going on. She knows that some Kurdish families believe in honor killings and isolating their female children until marriage and Anna is suspicious that this might be going on here.

The characters are well-developed, which is one of the real strengths of this book. I felt like I got to know a lot about Anna and Esko as I got deeper into the novel. The book is a real page-turner and a good thriller. My only problem with it is that the climax about the serial killer occurs at the very end and seems implausible. The situation with the Kurdish girl is resolved wonderfully and added a lot to my enjoyment of the book. I think that some of the translation is a bit awkward but most of the book reads very smoothly. It is a thriller that I'd recommend to readers who enjoy Scandinavian noir.

Good Bones, But Horrible English Translation

I'm a fan of Scandinavian noir. I started this book based on an article on the genre in The Guardian.

This book is a translation from the Finnish language original. I can see the author has potential. However, I'm having real issues with the translation. Firstly, this is a translation from Finnish to British English. That's OK, it adds to the charm. Also, Finns speaking English would likely be using that dialect. However, the translator (David Hackston) makes some peculiar word choices. They are not in character with the protagonist, the genre, or at points technically correct.

For example, early in the story Anna Fekete refers to her own "ass" as her "bottom". I can't envision her inner dialog being so juvenile. The description of a murder is made confusing by the erroneous use of the word "rifle". The murder weapon is typically used for duck hunting. Ducks are not hunted with a rifle. The murder weapon is a "shotgun". Also, shotguns 'shoot' "pellets" or "shot" not "bullets" as found in the text. Another example is Anna's use of the expression "bloke-to-bloke". I feel certain it was originally "man-to-man". Which is also the common usage in the UK.

Characters are good. The Anna character being the best. The values dissonance experienced by her character is the strongest suite of this story. Supporting police characters at the nick are a tad clichéd. Although, the Finnish spin to them makes them different enough. Victims, perps and supporting characters are a bit thin, but not cardboard.

Plotting has a solid foundation, but gets a bit creaky as the story progresses. Background plots are the stock "They Fight Crime!" trope going on between Anna and the Esko police character. A murder and a separate immigrant cultural clash push the story along. Steps taken will remind you of any British police procedural. I thought the author was too liberal with her red herrings. In addition, the perp is introduced at a peculiar time. The immigrant secondary story was more interesting to me than the main story.

Not being Finnish, world building is a part of this story for me. Action takes place in an unnamed, coastal Finnish city. I'm certain its Oulu from the minor locations that pop-up in the story. I can't agree with not naming the locale. I'd like to know more about Finland, without the locations be anonymized. However the city is a good backdrop for the current social issues of Finnish society exposed in the story.

This story has good bones. However, a translator or a good British copy editor more attuned to the lingo of noir, mysteries would have greatly benefited this book. Cringe worthy technical errors related to firearms exist throughout. Prose was frankly, weird giving the book a clunky YA feel. While the author and character have some merit, this book is just too poorly done for me to continue the next in the series "The Defenceless". Life is too short and reading time too scarce to waste it reading shoddily translated scandi-noir stories, when many well translated stories are 'out there'.

Readers interested in good scandi-noir should read "Blood on the Snow" by Jo Nesbø.

Although I finished the book, I could have put it down at any time without regret. I will say the ending was satisfying it just took a long time to get there. I found it hard to like or sympathize with Anna Fekete or most of the other characters. I find it hard to deal with people who feel sorry themselves without trying to help themselves, which I thought Anna and some of the other characters were doing. All in all I thought the plot line was pretty good but the way it was told was somewhat tedious.

This short story is nicely written and eloquent in revealing the state of mind of the captured pilot. It ended a bit short with no real conclusion, but still well done for the genre.
That being said, I was a bit disappointed to find that I had paid $2.99 for a story I had already read for free on a free erotic literature site!

About the Author
Michael J Boella is Faculty Fellow at University of Brighton and specialises in teaching human resource management and law. He is also actively involved in the industry as a management consultant and is editor of Croner's Catering, the reference book for the catering industry.

Steven Goss-Turner is Deputy Head / Principal Lecturer of the School of Service Management at the University of Brighton. He is a graduate of Strathclyde University. Before joining the University in 1992, he spent 16 years with the then Trusthouse Forte Hotels, rising to the position of Regional Personnel and Training Director for the London and International Division. His current research and teaching is focussed on employment practices, labour turnover, and human resource strategy in multi-site hospitality companies. He is the author of a number of books and articles, including the book, "Managing People in the Hospitality Industry", published by Croner in 2002.

About the Author
Angelique L’Amour was born in Los Angeles, California. The daughter of author Louis L’Amour, she grew up in the household of a prolific writer where writing and storytelling were a way of life. In 1988 Angelique created and edited a volume of quotes from her father’s works. Published by Bantam Doubleday Dell in 1988, A Trail of Memories spent 16 weeks on the New York Times bestseller list and was also a Publisher’s Weekly bestseller for 1988. Angelique has spent the past 20 years as a freelance editor working on academic papers, novels and film projects as well as writing content for two websites. She also created and taught a Creative Writing program for students from 8-80 and is contemplating developing that into an online and book course. Future projects include a spiritual self help book as well as several novels. You know how the worst part of any new path in life is the not knowing? Well this book takes one of the hardest situations and breaks it down so you can take a deep breath and say..."okay, I can see how to do this". I wish it was handed out right in the oncologist's office. Because it starts right off talking about how to talk to your kids, one of the first things you're going to do when you get home! Thank you for this book. I'm going to keep one on my shelf to hand a friend if they need it.

Dr. Frank Pickard wrote this textbook for his Theatre Arts students. However, the study of the art of theatre has something to offer to everyone regardless of your field of study. I enjoyed reading Dr. Pickard's three novels published so far and wanted to read more of his incredible work so I purchased his textbook too. Wish I had read this textbook before I attended college. Dr. Pickard offers sound advice applicable to anyone's life and profession. He is a great mentor! I enjoyed learning about theatre arts and all of life's lessons shared by this author. This textbook is an enjoyable read from start to finish. I highly recommend this book regardless of your chosen vocation.

Excellent Book !

I purchased this book about a year ago, and I have now read it pretty-much cover-to-cover. It is an excellent book. What I have found is that there are very few books on the market that cater to the individual who wants to build a microcomputer, starting from square one. This book caters to that market. If you are trying to build a Motorola 68000 system "from scratch", this book is for you. Be aware that there are a few pieces of information in the book that seem to be out of date. For instance, in the "working system" Mr. Antonakos describes how to build, he recommends an easier-to-use version of a UART that was apparently meant for the old Motorola 6800. The serial communications chip he recommends is now obsolete. However, as I have plowed my way through the morass of parts sellers and other charlatans, I have found that MANY parts are obsolete, even ones listed in the current catalogs of some of the biggest, most reputable IC distributors. Antonakos cannot be blamed for that. If you are interested in "building from scratch" with a Motorola 68000, also be aware of another data point : the 68000 seems to have an obituary written on it. My nose tells me Motorola is going to pull the carpet out from under it, maybe soon, or maybe not for another couple of years. In any case, it doesn't seem like the 68000 is going to be around for long. If you want to do it (build your own 68000 system), get this book and do it now !
