No One Writes Like Bradbury
By Philip P. Giunta
As usual, Ray Bradbury writes in splendid imagery, his prose poetic. No one else wrote, or will ever write, like Bradbury.

Yet, I fear most of today's editors would likely slash and gut much of his beautiful detail, carving the very heart from his work. Such are the changes in readers' tastes, which I partly blame on the dumbing down of society.

The Machineries of Joy was, not surprisingly, a joy to read. Of the 21 brilliant stories included, my favorites were:

"Tyrannosaurus Rex" — A stop-motion animator, tasked with creating a miniature T-Rex, just cannot seem to satisfy a film producer—until he completely recreates the beast's face to resemble someone very familiar.

"The Vacation"— Traveling atop a small four-wheeled workman's railcar, a family of three takes a serene cross-country excursion, able to avoid the rest of humanity—because they are the last people on Earth.

"Boys! Raise Giant Mushrooms in your Cellar!"— Inspired by an ad in Popular Mechanics, a boy sends away for a kit to grow mushrooms in his parents' cellar, something that seems to be catching on across the country. However, it isn't long before alarming behavior begins to manifest in those who eat the mushrooms.

"Almost The End Of The World" — Two miners return home to regale the locals with yet more tall tales of adventure only to find their town completely changed. Everything is freshly painted from homes to shops to flower pots—and the locals suddenly prohibit the miners from uttering a word.

"And The Sailor, Home From The Sea" — A dying sea captain and widower, now living on a wheat farm far from the ocean, asks his caretaker to bury him at sea where he lost his wife so many years ago. When the time comes, the caretaker follows through—without ever leaving the farm.

"A Miracle of Rare Device" — Two schemers always looking for a fast buck discover a mirage in the New Mexico desert that appears to be New York City! They begin selling tickets to passersby, only to learn that each person sees something completely different—and life altering—in the trick of light and heat.

"And So Died Riabouchinska" — A detective investigating a murder questions a ventriloquist, but only learns the truth through the man's exquisite Russian female puppet.

"Death and the Maiden" — Old Mam, or so the townsfolk call her, locked herself in her house decades ago, fearing the day when Death would come for her. She receives no visitors save for a grocery clerk who merely delivers food to her porch once every few weeks. When Death finally arrives, he tempts Old Mam with an unexpected offer.

"To The Chicago Abyss" — A homeless man who remembers what life on Earth was like before Annihilation Day is saved from a beating on the street by the member of a secret movement that wishes to return to the days of old. The homeless man's reputation has fallen under the scrutiny of the authorities so the movement's followers send the homeless man to a place of safety, but not before he imparts his knowledge to them.

"The Anthem Sprinters" — In Dublin, a group of Irishman place bets on who can run out of the cinema the fastest after a movie, in order to avoid listening to Ireland's national anthem, which is played after the end of every film. When an American tourist is convinced to ante up and join the fun, he finds that even this callous group has a heart of gold.

Stories that are a joy to read
By Dave Deubler
Ray Bradbury is one of the finest short story writers of his era, and this book is a marvelous showcase of the depth and breadth of his work. Bradbury is often pigeon-holed as a science fiction writer, because of the enormous popular success of his futuristic novel Fahrenheit 451 and the excellent short story collection The Martian Chronicles, but much of his work transcends science fiction and fantasy altogether. In this collection (as with several others), Bradbury shows us his more human side, with offerings that range from the fantastic to the everyday, but always with the emphasis on people, and how they react to the sometimes difficult situations they find themselves in. There are a couple good science fiction yarns, including "The One Who Waits" with its menacing feel, and the casually apocalyptic "Boys! Raise Giant Mushrooms in Your Cellar!" but even these feature protagonists who are nothing like the standard types. Unlike the driven loners who populate many works of science fiction, Bradbury's characters are members of families, visit with friends, and even play active parts in their communities. Bradbury chooses to make his characters human not with cruelty and vulgarity, but with compassion and simplicity, as in "The Beggar on O'Connell Bridge." Bradbury narrates in a muted tone, making the reader listen closely to hear him; his stories are quieter than perhaps any modern writer's. Into this reverent hush, he places small nuggets of story, sometimes with very little action, or with the action delineated, but not actually taking place within the story, such as the quiet evening before the battle in "The Drummer Boy of Shiloh." Some of the stories are almost like prose poems, extolling the wonders of nature, as in "A Miracle of Rare Device" or offering subtle social commentary, as in "Almost the End of the World." As such, Bradbury is not for everyone; action-lovers may find his work boring or even frustrating, and fans of science fiction and fantasy will discover that much of his work is both reality-based and non-scientific. Instead, he searches out some obscure corner of personal morality, and asks us to accept it for what it is. Bradbury believes in the essential goodness of human beings, despite their occasional lapses, and makes us feel good to be part of the human race. He is willing to forgive humanity its foibles, and hopes with us for a better tomorrow. For today, that seems cause enough for joy.

A Master at the Height of his Powers
By Avid Reader
This is vintage Bradbury - no punk, obscenity, fantasy, horror or sex. Just beautiful, succinct, wonderfully constructed short stories that give new meaning to the term "American Genius".
The stories range in subject matter from religion to space to family to war but through it all Bradbury explores the meaning of being human in all its wondrous degrees. There is more poetry in this prose than in most English books of poetry. Every single story - I mean every one! - is excellent, thought provoking and haunting. What a writer!

The Knife Man: Blood, Body Snatching, and the Birth of Modern Surgery, by Wendy Moore

In an era when bloodletting was considered a cure for everything from colds to smallpox, surgeon John Hunter was a medical innovator, an eccentric, and the person to whom anyone who has ever had surgery probably owes his or her life. In this sensational and macabre story, we meet the surgeon who counted not only luminaries Benjamin Franklin, Lord Byron, Adam Smith, and Thomas Gainsborough among his patients but also “resurrection men” among his close acquaintances. A captivating portrait of his ruthless devotion to uncovering the secrets of the human body, and the extraordinary lengths to which he went to do so—including body snatching, performing pioneering medical experiments, and infecting himself with venereal disease—this rich historical narrative at last acknowledges this fascinating man and the debt we owe him today.

From Publishers Weekly
Brilliant anatomist, foul-mouthed and well met, avid empiricist and grave robber, John Hunter cut an astonishing figure in Georgian England. Born in Scotland in 1728, he followed his brother, a renowned physician, to London and into the intellectually grasping, fiercely competitive world of professional medicine. With ample servings of 18th-century filth and gore, Moore offers a vivid look at this remarkable period in science history, when many of the most impressive advances were made by relentless iconoclasts like Hunter. In an age when ancient notions of bodily humors still smothered medical thinking, Hunter challenged orthodoxy whenever facts were absent—which was usually the case. A prodigious experimenter—to the point of obsession—he dissected thousands of corpses and countless animals (many of them living) in his effort to define the nature of the human body. Yet he was also an early adherent of medical minimalism, shunning bloodletting by default and advocating physical therapy over invasive surgeries. This is a deftly written and informative tale that will please readers of science history, period buffs and everyone in between. (Oct. 1)

From Booklist
Sometimes watershed achievements in science and medicine, such the Salk polio vaccine, are lastingly linked to a name, and sometimes not. Moore depicts John Hunter as a man to whom modern surgeons are hugely indebted, yet few outside of medicine have heard of him. The eighteenth-century English surgeon made his mark--though some of his contemporaries likely would have preferred the word scar--by departing radically from accepted surgical procedures of the day. In an era when practitioners relied upon the centuries-old knowledge of the second-century Greek physician Galen, Hunter was a revolutionary who "believed all surgery should be governed by scientific principles, which were based on reasoning, observation, and experimentation." Without setting tradition aside and dissecting and experimenting on human cadavers and live animals, which garnered Hunter much contempt from colleagues and neighbors alike, he would never have accomplished his goals. Moore's telling of his story is detailed and often grisly but engrossing throughout. Donna Chavez

Review
Praise for the Knife Man:

“The surgeon John Hunter (1728–93) is not a well-known name outside specialist circles, although that scandalous situation should be corrected by Wendy Moore’s marvelous biography.” —The Times Higher

“Definitely not for the squeamish, Moore’s visceral portrait of this complex and brilliant man offers a wonderful insight into sickness, suffering, and surgery in the 18th century.” —The Guardian (UK)

“Moore’s feel for pace and narrative is impeccable. Her book contains just the right amount of background scenery to bring Hunter alive without swamping him.… She is, at last, the biographer Hunter deserves.” —The Independent

A Brilliant Anatomist and Surgeon in a Lively Biography
By Rob Hardy
It is hard to understand that the genius John Hunter, one of the star figures of the Enlightenment, should not be one of those scientists whom everyone has heard of. If the name does not ring a bell, it is strongly recommended that you pick up _The Knife Man: The Extraordinary Life and Times of John Hunter, Father of Modern Surgery_ (Broadway Books) by Wendy Moore. Not just a genius in surgical technique and innovator of scientific experiment to guide surgical choices, he was a brilliant anatomist of other species as well, he was an attentive teacher, and he set up a museum that demonstrated the now accepted views of the origins of life and the age of the Earth. He was constantly attentive to animal behavior and physiology and his curiosity never stopped. A mainstay to his friends, he was also willful and irascible, and made enemies easily, one of the reasons he got limited credit during his lifetime for his new ways of thinking. Moore's book is an exhilarating view of a foolhardy, energetic, innovative, and brilliant man.

John Hunter was born in 1728 in Scotland. He left school at thirteen, and left Oxford after just two months. He instead followed his older brother William to London to help in William's anatomy school in Covent Garden. He would dissect thousands of bodies, and was well acquainted with the "resurrection men", the grave robbers who provided fresh, or maybe not so fresh, specimens. Hunter's reliance on observation and experiment put him squarely against the medical establishment, which had insisted on relying on Aristotle, Hippocrates, and Galen, "preferring to bleed, blister, and purge their patients to early graves." He alienated his fellow surgeons by insisting that surgery was always the last step that should be taken, and should be avoided unless absolutely necessary. His innovations in surgery include teaching (from his days as a naval surgeon) that musket balls entering the body were best left where they were, if possible; digging them out did more damage than the bullet itself. He knew the value of using a placebo when testing a medicine's powers. He made the first experimentation (on dogs) to show what the lymphatic system did. Not only was he not above dealing with the resurrection men, but he tricked the friends of Charles Byrne ("The Irish Giant") into burying a huge casket of rocks, while the giant's body went to the anatomical table. He married well, a woman poet who kept salons; they lived in different worlds, and he designed a house that would accommodate society at the front and resurrection men at the back. (Robert Louis Stevenson is said to have based Jekyll and Hyde on the idea of this structure.) He was always eager to get to his research rooms instead of socializing, but an observer said of the course-talking Scot that he was not polished or refined, "but from originality of thought and earnestness of mind he was extremely agreeable in conversation." He loved keeping strange animals, and loved dissecting them when they died. He drove a cart pulled by three zebus, curly-horned Asian buffaloes, and alarmed his neighbors by using it as regular transportation. He may have been the inspiration for Doctor Dolittle. Wendy Moore has done a spectacular job of bringing him and his times to us. _The Knife Man_ has many gruesome patches that are hard to take, from descriptions of surgery without anesthesia, to experiments on hapless dogs, to the business of the cadaver trade. Its portrait of an extraordinary thinker, however, is vivid, compelling, and enormous fun.

Just a great book; well written and interesting
By Joe Bee
I truly enjoyed reading this book. Full of historical references to demonstrate the primitiveness of medicine during that epoch. Were it not for pioneers like John Hunter where would human anatomy be?

Jacob's Hands: A Fable, by Christopher Isherwood, Aldous Huxley

Jacob Ericson is a quiet, kind and somewhat simple man who works as a ranch hand for crotchety Professor Carter and his crippled daughter, Sharon, in California's Mojave Desert in the 1920s. Jacob is a good man, genuine, honorable, but hardly extraordinary–until he miraculously heals a dying calf with his hands.

However, while he is content to cure the town's animals, it isn't long before he is persuaded to use his gift in other ways. When Sharon, whom he adores, begs him to heal her leg, he cannot deny her.

His acquiescence causes them both to be exploited. Sharon runs away to Los Angeles to pursue her dreams of stardom. Jacob follows her, hopeful that they will meet again. And they do–as miserable performers in a seedy stage show. While they plan their escape from the dreary stage life, Jacob is asked to heal a self–absorbed young millionaire. And with his assent, Jacob's plans and all of his dreams begin to crumble.

Written in tight, vivid, and seamlessly crafter prose, this previously unpublished tale by two of the greatest storytellers of the twentieth century shows the dangers a magical gift holds for even the noblest of characters.

Amazon.com Review
This collaborative effort between Aldous Huxley and Christopher Isherwood, from a film project they were contracted to write in the late 1930s, was discovered in a trunk at Huxley's estate by actress Sharon Stone, who was researching the author's work for a film based on one of his short stories. Jacob's Hands is a novella-length film treatment for a script about a ranch hand who, after learning that he has the gift of healing, becomes disillusioned when he discovers that mending a broken body does not always heal a tormented soul. The slim volume proves both mesmerizing and moving, and the use of the present tense lends an air of innocence and mystery to the story, while the book's emotional undercurrents and passions stir up deeper, troubling responses. Jacob's Hands is a complex, disquieting modern fairy tale unlike anything else by either author, and a fascinating artifact of their Hollywood careers. --Michael Bronski

From Publishers Weekly
Forgotten in a trunk for six decades and uncovered by actress Sharon Stone, who flirted with the idea of producing it, this sentimental screen story, or novella, revisits the 1920s with a nostalgic eye. Gentle, simple-souled Jacob Erickson works on a ranch in the Mojave desert as a semi-magical healer of sick and injured animals. When Sharon, the boss's crippled but stage-struck daughter, asks shyly adoring Jacob to heal her, too, he obliges and she flees the ranch. Eighteen months later, they meet again in L.A.: he's a workman, healing children who are brought to him at a small church; she works in a burlesque theater?the reality pit stop of her stage dreams. Seeing money in Jacob's powers, the theater's unscrupulous managers blackmail Sharon into convincing Jacob to go into the healing business with them. Sharon and Jacob should go back to the clean pure desert and do some good, but they are trapped by Jacob's compassion for one of his patients, Earl Medwin, the chronically ill heir to a vast fortune, and by Sharon's final surrender to temptation?Earl's assiduous attentions and all that money. Written in the present tense, occasionally in summary paragraphs that seem to be standing in for dialogue, Huxley's and Isherwood's collaboration makes even Forrest Gump (which it resembles much more closely than, say, Isherwood's Cabaret-inspiring The Berlin Stories or Huxley's Brave New World) look morally complex. Even so, it exposes a strong spine of dramatic conflict and a definite period charm. Agent, Dorris Halsey; film rights to Arthur Axelman, Rialto Films and Dorothea Petrie. (Sept.) FYI: The book's jacket will feature an illustration by Don Bacardi, who was Isherwood's lover.

From Kirkus Reviews
A literary curiosity. While resident in Hollywood in the 1940s, the acerbic British novelist Aldous Huxley and the playwright Christopher Isherwood collaborated on two screenplays. Though the actual screenplay of ``Jacob's Hands,'' the tale of a naive faith healer in the 1920s, apparently no longer exists, a narrative treatment of it was recently located among Huxley's remaining papers and is now being published. While elements of the tale are clearly reminiscent of these writers (Huxley's bemused fascination with America's pursuit of fame and fortune; Isherwood's deep interest in spirituality), the prose is at best workmanlike. That isn't surprisingthis draft was likely meant for private circulation, not publication. The story focuses on Jacob, a traumatized veteran of WWI who has fled to the Mojave Desert for solitude, but is discovered to carry an uncanny ability to heal in his handsas well as a gift for sensing the true state of someone's spirit. Used to practicing his gift on animals, he reluctantly agrees to try to help Sharon, a young crippled woman. He succeeds, becomes infatuated with her, and follows her to Los Angeles, where she has gone determined to become a star. Not surprisingly, Jacob is discovered by a huckster who uses the healer's love for Sharon (who has become a cynical, opportunistic entertainer) to turn him into a saleable commodity. Romantic complications and betrayals follow, and Jacob eventually flees back to the desert. It's hard not to imagine the film while reading this spare narrative, but equally hard to find much pleasure in the prose. A minor, if intriguing, footnote to two impressive careers. -- Copyright 1998, Kirkus Associates, LP. All rights reserved.

I love this book!
By Kelly Jones
The narration of this story is more simplistic than Brave New World, but keep in mind that Jacob's Hands was written as a screenplay, not a novel. Aldous Huxley and Christopher Isherwood have created a wonderful story and though the reading is easy, the questions brought to life in this tale are anything but. Jacob is the shy, gentle antagonist (who reminds me of John Steinbeck's Lenny)blessed and cursed simultaneously with the gift of healing. Exploited and heart-broken, he must determine the true benefit of mending the broken bodies brought to him when he can do nothing to repair their souls. Ideas in this story range from the physical hardships of the lame, to the role of spirituality in healing, to first loves and betrayal. Enjoyable and thought-provoking, I recommend this book to anyone who likes to ponder over Huxley's logic, or just enjoys to read.

HEAL ME!
By Erin C. Stelter
Jacob's Hands is a tantalizing account of one man's eyes opening. Poor Jacob, so ingnorant of the world. He truly believes in goodness. This book is a look into the evils of human nature. Human nature is greedy and self serving, unfortunately, Jacob does not realize this. In attempt to give his love all that he can, he opens himself up to exploitation. This book is a reader's journey into the souls of the pure and the corrupt. Perhaps the authors whished us all to take a good deep look into our own souls and the manner in which we treat others. This book is just one more glorious demonstration of life by Adlous Huxley, this time with the help of Christopher Isherwood.

To Be Swallowed
By Stacey @ The Scenic Life
The story goes that in 1997 actress Sharon Stone was reading the diaries of playwright/novelist Christopher Isherwood and discovered that Christopher has collaborated on a screenplay with novelist/essayist Aldous Huxley. She asked permission to search the estate, and in a dusty trunk was found a yellowed copy of Jacob's Hands. The best guess is that the fable had been written in the late 1930's, when (as the back jacket says), "a large sector of the intellectual community of Europe immigrated to the United States, to California in particular. What they found there was Nirvana - sunshine, freedome, mysticism, and the burgeoning movie industry." The two great thinkers met amidst this illectual Utopia and wrote this work together.

This is a short book, an easy read in an hour's time. As such, it is hard to say too much without giving it all away. Jacob is a good, honest, decent, sound, strapping young man. The kind of man that sees no ill will in others because he has none in himself. He learns as a farmhand on a California ranch that he has the power to heal. The power makes other love him, suspect him, and ultimately exploit him. He loves Sharon, the daughter of his former boss on the ranch. He meets Earl, a young millionaire with need of his healing powers. The three of them form a triangle that sort of reminds me of the ending of Ethan Frome (don't ask me why, though, since it's kind of a stretch).

The overriding theme, I believe, of the book is this question: is it more important to heal the soul or to heal the body? Are they ultimately connected or mutually exclusive? There is also some discussion of how sometimes we hold on to our illness, our weakness; we are wont to let them go. Because somehow they come to define us, and we survive more with the fear than we can live without it.

There is a brief introduction to the book by Aldous' wife, Laura Archera Huxley. It is useful in the fact that she gives some background into Aldous' thoughts on healing and the moral and religious implications of such a gift. It helps to set an informed backdrop to this interesting and thought-provoking fable.

Seeing Things as They Are: A Theory of Perception, by John R. Searle

This book provides a comprehensive account of the intentionality of perceptual experience. With special emphasis on vision Searle explains how the raw phenomenology of perception sets the content and the conditions of satisfaction of experience. The central question concerns the relation between the subjective conscious perceptual field and the objective perceptual field. Everything in the objective field is either perceived or can be perceived. Nothing in the subjective field is perceived nor can be perceived precisely because the events in the subjective field consist of the perceivings , whether veridical or not, of the events in the objective field.

Searle begins by criticizing the classical theories of perception and identifies a single fallacy, what he calls the Bad Argument, as the source of nearly all of the confusions in the history of the philosophy of perception. He next justifies the claim that perceptual experiences have presentational intentionality and shows how this justifies the direct realism of his account. In the central theoretical chapters, he shows how it is possible that the raw phenomenology must necessarily determine certain form of intentionality. Searle introduces, in detail, the distinction between different levels of perception from the basic level to the higher levels and shows the internal relation between the features of the experience and the states of affairs presented by the experience. The account applies not just to language possessing human beings but to infants and conscious animals. He also discusses how the account relates to certain traditional puzzles about spectrum inversion, color and size constancy and the brain-in-the-vat thought experiments. In the final chapters he explains and refutes Disjunctivist theories of perception, explains the role of unconscious perception, and concludes by discussing traditional problems of perception such as skepticism.

Review

"...[O]ffers a straightforward, realistic account of how one perceives objects and states of affairs... Highly recommended." --Choice

"Immensely refreshing." --The Weekly Standard

"Seeing Things As They Are is full of interesting ideas. It is engagingly written, and deals with big questions about the mind-world relations and the relation between the phenomenology and intentionality of perception. I recommned it to anyone interested in what makes perceptual contact with a mind-independent world possible."
-- The Philosophers's Magazine

"Searle's book is a wonderful addition to the philosophical discipline of perception, and a useful way for someone who is not well versed in the subject to receive and extensive overview of the historical arguments. The overarching thesis is a strong defense of Direct Realism that will inspire the reader to contemplate the ways they discern meaning through experience." -- Englewood Review of Books

... his new book Searle counters what he calls the Bad Argument that has ruined epistemology for three centuries
By michael fowler
In the first part of his new book Searle counters what he calls the Bad Argument that has ruined epistemology for three centuries, namely the idea that we don’t perceive the world directly but through an intermediary called variously sense data, representation, or even interface. His claim is that our senses present the actual world to us, and do not create a picture or representation that must be perceived in place of the real world that it somehow resembles.
He does this first by attacking the notion that consciousness is some nonphysical entity that can’t react with physical entities. Instead Searle holds that consciousness is a biological property of the mind and is caused by neurons in the brain, just as digestion is a property of the stomach and is caused by glands and enzymes. As such consciousness belongs to the physical world and ultimately reduces to the particles and fields of atomic physics. But Searle is not a microbiologist or brain scientist and does not tell us how consciousness emerges from the brain, only that it does. He is a philosopher and here is interested in how consciousness works in perception.
In claiming that vision presents the real word to us, Searle relies on theories of causation and intentionality. An object causes light to be reflected into our eyes, and the resulting visual experience is an intentional one, by which is meant that it seems to us to be the object out there in the real world. In other words, the visual experience has conditions of satisfaction, or requirements of being a certain way, which are that it presents a real object to us. As Searle puts it, we use the same words to describe our visual experience as to describe the object we’re looking at. The result is that our experience seems to be caused by the object we are looking at, and is a presentation of that object.
In a fascinating discussion on hallucination, Searle says that when we are hallucinating, our visual apparatus works exactly the same as when we are having a true or veridical perception, except the cause of the perception shifts from the world to the mind, and the object of the perception out in the world goes missing.
Searle thinks that everything we think or perceive gives rise to a special feeling of what it’s like to do or think something. This seems to be part of his concept of intentionality. But Searle says some odd things in this connection. If he is married to one of two identical twins, for example, or presented with a car identical to the one he drives, he seems to believe that the phenomenology or appearance of one of the twins will change once he recognizes which is his wife, and the same for his car once he realizes that he’s looking at his very own car. I don’t get that, since by stipulation the identical twins and cars can’t be distinguished by appearance. Yes, the intentionality will change, since his feelings and attitudes will enter into his consciousness, but why the phenomenology also? I don’t see that he needs to say that.
Still that is a handy belief to have when you are refuting the idea that computers are conscious, as Searle does. Obviously a computer like the ones we have now do not have subjective, qualitative feelings about the world or about their computational chores, and so can’t be conscious. Searle has other arguments against the consciousness of computers as well, and it is quite refreshing to read a thinker who doesn’t subscribe to the belief that the brain is a computer and the mind some sort of computer program. Such writers as Dennett, who do hold that view, simply eliminate consciousness rather than explain it. I’m with Searle all the way here.
Searle is quite expert in zeroing in on the logical flaws in the theories of consciousness of others, and does so with a deadpan humor that can be quite amusing. He goes through the Greats we read in college, Descartes, Berkeley, Hume and Kant, and shows how their theories of the mind or skepticism have impeded understanding of what really goes on in perception. In contrast to the writing style of Dennett, he attacks the subject of consciousness in perception head on and stays with it, rather than writing about everything under the sun in a circuitous and ultimately inaccurate approach. The prose is clear if the arguments are sometimes dense, and free of jargon. Also included are helpful pictures and diagrams. It’s enjoyable when Searle challenges those with a different view of perception to draw a diagram that better explains it than his.
I would have liked Searle to talk more about so-called hardwiring in the brain, particularly as it relates to such things as language acquisition. Searle’s position is that there is no unconscious rule in the mind unless in principle it could become conscious. I don’t know if the innate rules of language acquisition could become conscious. What would that mean in the case of a two-year old leaning to speak English? Chomsky’s idea of innate but unconscious rules seem to be a given in philosophy these days, and if Searle doesn’t buy it, and I gather he doesn’t, I’d like to read more about why. Does he question all of Chomsky? How does he better explain language acquisition?
Also Searle still leaves us with a kind of dualism. After explaining our centuries-old failure to solve the mind-body problem as set up by Descartes and others, where mind is something nonphysical that in principle can’t react casually with the physical world, he opts for a kind of materialism with two different ontologies, or types of existence. There is the first-person ontology of an individual’s private conscious events, and the third-person ontology of the objective world. But somehow both are the same kind of stuff reducible to atoms and forces. Well, it sounds right. The trick, and I think Searle pulls it off, is to present a coherent theory of perception without tripping up, to do it better than the rest, and to do it with humor and style.

A Good Introduction to Philosophy of Perception
By A.Luther
When it comes to making technical philosophical jargon easily understood, John Searle is one of the best. That is not to say that Searle dumbs things down for the audience, it's just that he is good at getting rid of all the hyperbole that often exists in academic philosophy. Searle opens his book with a critique of what he calls the "Bad Argument" in philosophy. The Bad Argument is that since we may have a perceptual experience of the world that is really a hallucination but is in fact indistinguishable from a veridical (accurate) perception then what both hallucinatory and veridical perception must have in common is the perception of "sense data." Searle contends that this is a huge philosophical mistake that many of the "great" western philosophers have made and has led to problems with what these philosophers can say about the ontologically objective world. Searle contends that what is missing is an understanding of the intentional nature of perception. That is, perception provides us with a direct presentation of the objective world unmediated by sense data because it is the nature of perception to be about the objective events in the world that cause our perceptions. In working out his argument Searle touches on the issue of consciousness, classic thought experiments in philosophy of mind such as the "brain in the vat" and he discusses the philosophical notion of disjunctivism in perception. Disjunctivism is the argument that veridical and hallucinatory perceptions are different because there is something phenomenally different in our experience of veridical perception versus hallucination. No fan of disjuncitivism, Searle argues that there is no difference in the subjective or phenomenal character of veridical perceptions and hallucination - no difference in what he calls their subjective ontology - but there is a difference in their intentional character. Namely, that while veridical percepts are about objects in the world, hallucinations are actually about nothing at all. On reading Searle I find myself partly in agreement with him but only up to a limited point. The biggest problem I have with Searle is his view that the brain "causes" consciousness and that subjective experience are created "in the head." I think this a big problem for his "Direct Realist" position of perception since it means that our perceptions cannot be unmediated as any brain activity relevant to consciousness must be instead mediated by sensory signals from our sensory receptors. Hence those internal brain dynamics relevant to consciousness do not have direct contact with the physical objects that we experience as the subjective contents of perception. Like most contemporary philosophers and scientists who study consciousness and brain, this leads Searle to believe that that subjective experience is a brain event. However, Searle, despite being adamant that consciousness is a natural product of the brain cannot say how the brain causes consciousness. In later chapters of the book Searle is critical of computational theories of mind, so we can rule out that the possibility that he thinks that consciousness is somehow a bi-product of information processing in the brain. This leaves one confused as to how Searle thinks the brain creates the subjective contents of our experience. I should also note that in discussing how relations between the world and subjective perceptions of it occur, he is dismissive of both resemblance theories - the notion that we perceive objects in the world accurately because our perceptions somehow resemble those objects - and causal theories that suggest we perceive objects in the world because our perceptions occur at the end of what Searle calls "a billiard ball" chain of causative events. While I agree with Searle that he is right to dismiss these explanations of how we perceive the world, Searle does not really replace it with anything else since the current neuroscience understanding of how the brain might perceive the world boils right down to "billiard ball" causation, or what Aristotle would have called efficient and material causation between brain and world. My gut feeling is that Searle is really a lot more sceptical about our capacity to scientifically understand the mind/consciousness then he lets on to his audience. I definitely recommend this book to anyone wanting to come to grips with the problems in the philosophy of perception.

CUTTING THE GORDIAN KNOT
By Claudio Ferreira Costa
This is the best defence of direct realism that I've ever seen. The fallacy that Searle identifies in the literature on the problem of perception is fundamental, and he is right in saying that it was in a certain sense tragic, originating the whole traditions of representationalism and idealism. This deceptivelly easy to read book is a philosophical achievement. He knows how to cut the Gordian knot.

"In this book the father comes to life as a whole human being in analytical theory."
—British Journal of Psychiatry

"A most welcome book...A rich compendium on a theme that all readers will recognize as one that has, until recently, been conspicuous by its absence in the literature of both analytical psychology and psychoanalysis."
—Journal of Analytical Psychology

A rapprochement of analytical psychology with psychoanalysis is long overdue. Much of the movement in this direction has stemmed from the professional organizations in San Francisco and London. With this volume, Samuels has made a valuable contribution to this development. A very fair and helpful review of the relationship between Freud and Jung and the differences that developed in their psychologies, partly as a result of the interaction between the two pioneers, is included in the editor's introduction."
—Contemporary Psychology

"An erudite and excellent introduction...provides a clear exposition of the key issues that caused dispute between Freud and Jung, a summary of Jung's view on the structure and dynamics of the psyche and his view of therapy. It is commendable that many of the papers that follow provide a wealth of clinical illustrations."
—Group Analysis

"Important for clinicians, The Father will also serve the general reader who has had aminimal introduction to Jungian thought and who seeks further authoritative insight."
—Reference and Research Book News

"True to its subject, this book opens witha tantalizing archetypal dilemma...which in this case, is the psychological consequences of feminist consciousness among men. Samuel's excellent introduction describes the Jungian perspective."

Trading Basics: Evolution of a Trader, by Thomas N. Bulkowski

Comprehensive coverage of the four major trading styles

Evolution of a Trader explores the four trading styles that people use when learning to trade or invest in the stock market. Often, beginners enter the stock market by:

  • Buying and holding onto a stock (value investing). That works well until the trend ends or a bear market begins. Then they try
  • Position trading. This is the same as buy-and-hold, except the technique sells positions before a significant trend change occurs.
  • Swing trading follows when traders increase their frequency of trading, trying to catch the short-term up and down swings. Finally, people try
  • Day trading by completing their trades in a single day.

This series provides comprehensive coverage of the four trading styles by offering numerous tips, sharing discoveries, and discussing specific trading setups to help you become a successful trader or investor as you journey through each style.

Trading Basics takes an in-depth look at money management, stops, support and resistance, and offers dozens of tips every trader should know.

Fundamental Analysis and Position Trading discusses when to sell a buy-and-hold position, uncovers which fundamentals work best, and uses them to find stocks that become 10-baggers—stocks that climb by 10 times their original value.

Swing and Day Trading reveals methods to time the market swings, including specific trading setups, but it covers the basics as well, such as setting up a home trading office and how much money you can make day trading.

From the Inside Flap

How you trade or invest in the stock markets depends on market conditions. Buying and holding on to a stock during a bear market can mean a substantial decline in net worth. Day trading when the markets are soaring can add to stress unnecessarily. Thomas Bulkowski discusses the evolution of a trader from buy-and-hold to position trading, swing trading, and day trading in his hotly anticipated series of how-to guises, Evolution of a Trader.

The first book in the series, Trading Basics, is a practical introduction to the art and science of stock trading. The book discusses money management, a topic so often overlooked in financial works. How do you size a position properly? How many stocks should a portfolio hold for proper diversification? Should you scale into or out of positions? Do dollar-cost-averaging and averaging down works? He answers these questions and more.

Choosing the correct type of stop can mean the difference between success and failure, profit and loss. Learn why stop-loss orders cut profit more than they reduce risk. Sometimes, stops are best left unused because they cash you out of potentially winning trades prematurely.

Bulkowski discusses a half-dozen types of support and resistance, then he measures and compares their effectiveness, If you can determine where a stock is going to reverse because of overhead resistance or underlying support, then the riches on Wall Street can be yours. His research is a gold mine of information waiting to be unearthed.

He discusses forty-five tips that every trader should know. Have you heard of the 2B rule? Or how about trading busted chart patterns? Does divergence in the RSI indicator really work or have today’s markets made it obsolete? Bulkowski offers tips on finding the market direction, determining when the market has bottomed, and over a dozen tips on when to sell.

He wraps it all up by helping you diagnose trading problems. Are you entering or exiting your trades too early or too late? Did you average up? Are you buying out of season?

Bulkowski’s work sets an example of how financial books should be written. He doesn’t just repeat what others have said. Rather, he investigates and researches his facts before teaching the reader in an entertaining and informative style that is accessible to the beginner and the professional. Anyone investing or trading the markets can benefit from this series.

The first book, Trading Basics, takes an in-depth look at money management, stops, support, and resistance, and offers dozens of tips every trader should know.

The second book, Fundamental Analysis and Position trading, explains value investing and tests fundamental factors, such as book value, price-to-earnings, and price-to-sales ratios, to see how important they are to stock selection and performance. Chapters such as “How to Double Your Money,” “finding 10-Baggers,” and “Trading 10-Baggers” put the fundamentals to work. Position trading introduces market timing to help remove the risk of buying and holding a stock for years.

The third book in the series, Swing and Day Trading, explains how to use chart patterns to swing and day trade. It reviews the basics, including the home office setup and the cost of day trading, and drills down into specific trading strategies such as the opening range breakout and the opening gap setup. It introduces new research on major reversal times and the time most likely to set the day’s high and low. That is valuable information to a day trader.

Whether you are a novice who has never purchased a stock but wants to, or a professional money manager, these books are a necessary addition to any market enthusiast’s bookshelf.

    Great Introduction to Technical Trading
    By Alan Battista
This review comes from stockineer.com which is why I wrote the review initially. It's worth sharing here as well to help others make their decision on the purchase of the book, so if the review sounds like it was written for another site, it was...just copied and pasted here.

    Intended Audience (from the author):

"The three books in this series were written for people unfamiliar with the inner workings of the stock market, but will still curl the toes of professionals, too. Research is used to prove the ideas discussed, but is presented in an easy to understand and light-hearted manner. You will find the books to be as entertaining as they are informative and packed with moneymaking tips and ideas. Use the ideas presented here to hone your trading style and improve your success. Whether you are a novice who has never purchased a stock but wants to, or a professional money manager who trades daily, these books are a necessary addition to any market enthusiast's bookshelf."

    Preface:

The preface describes a flailing trader trying to find his way in the world of investing, looking for the style that suits him best. He fails a few times but he eventually figures out what kind of trader he'd like to become. The intro reminds me a lot of an article I'd written several weeks ago: What Type of Investor are You? In fact, Trading Basics takes these concepts and makes an entire book out of it, going into a lot more detail than I could on a multi-page article.

    Chapter 1

Tom shares his secrets to retiring at age 36. Well, his secrets are things that a lot of us bred on hard work already know. Things like saving your money, charting your finances and making wise decisions are big parts of the equation. A little luck here and there will set you on your way. A lot of successful investors have hit a grand slam or two in their day that really gives them the capital to grow faster. Tom shares his personal story and philosophy with Michaels Stores. I've personally had some big trades, the best being General Growth Properties that instantly (see years) created a portfolio of sufficient size to make some real money. Couple this luck with hard work and wise decision making, and you have a winning recipe.

    Chapter 2

This chapter focuses on money management principles, specifically risk assessment, position size, cost averaging, leverage and the number of stocks to hold to name a few. Bulkowski offers examples with real numbers to support his position on each of the sub topics. I found myself skimming through some of the examples, taking his word, and not checking his math. For the average reader, his charts and summaries will get you to what you need to know. The chapter, as intended, is written to give good "rules of thumb" for investors that are just beginning to understand the market. More seasoned traders will point out exceptions to each "rule of thumb," but it is because they practice different trading tactics depending on the situation. Bulkowski points this out as different trading styles (Evolution of a Trader)) is the overarching theme. In the end, Bulkowski makes suggestions but leaves it up to the individual trader to pick his own method.

I did pick up a few new things myself. I specifically was interested in how some stop and buy orders are filled and at what prices.

    Chapter 3

Everyone who invests in stocks needs to know when to cut losses and move on. New investors hear the old adage, "you only lose money when you sell" and they tend to let small losses become big losses. Bulkowski does the math and points out that if you lose 50% in a stock, it'll need to rise 100% to make your money back...for a 75% loss, it'll need to go up 300% to break even. Of course that's motherhood and apple pie, but the point is that the more you lose, the harder it is to come back from it....so don't lose money! The chapter focuses on how to not lose money while still gaining money through the use of stops. There are lots of stop types that are introduced here, all of which can be researched or found in other books, but in typical Tom fashion, he applies statistics to each type of stop and associates performances of each to back up his points. In the end, he makes recommendations but essentially leaves it up to the trader to pick his own path to fit his personality and investing style.

    Chapter 4

Support and resistance, in my mind, is really the foundation of trading stocks. There are more likely locations that you should buy or sell, but how likely? Bulkowski offers well known types of support and resistance, but he takes it a step further and offers statistics and percentages of the likelihood of their effectiveness. This is something I haven't seen in any other book, making this a rather unique and valuable chapter. I found myself rereading sections multiple times to make sure I understood the point, reminiscent of looking over figures and numbers in my years of education. I am thankful that there are summaries and a final table at the end of the chapter to give me the key takeaways so that every time I wish to reference the material, I have a single page to study. The table then lays out the pages you can look for more information. The support and resistance levels discussed in this chapter are a cursory look at the concepts and are appropriate for the intended audience of the book. There are several books devoted to the subject if/when you decide to dig deeper into trading.

    Chapter 5

This chapter is the largest of the book, containing "45 Tips Every Trader Should Know." This chapter introduces concepts that most beginning traders do not know and will likely spend some time rereading paragraphs over and over, cross referencing the charts and tables to ensure they get the point...or at least they should. A lot of it may be confusing at first and you may have to do some additional research on each topic so that you can interpret a physical reason for the chart squiggles, but there are footnotes where you can find more information on the subjects. After all, this is an introductory book, not a full reference set. It is, however, a great place to get started. After some time trading, these become second nature and you take them for granted, but I did pick up a thing or two as well as reminded me of things I'd forgotten or don't use on a regular basis. Some of the items discussed were divergences, Fibonacci numbers, failure swings, price gaps, pattern sizes, etc.. In standard Bulkowski fashion, he applies statistics to the "tips" and comes up with effectiveness and a recommendation. While I find the statistics useful, I also understand the large challenge presented to Tom in coming up with these statistics. Most ideas tested are a result of programming which will identify the desired situation, but it will likely ignore the art of technical trading which is putting multiple pieces of evidence together to enter or exit a trade, including the type of market, indicators, events, etc.. He does present the information for bull vs bear markets, wide patterns vs narrow patterns as well as many other situations, so he's not ignoring the additional factors. I just want to further point out to traders looking to learn the art of technical trading that we are aiming to gather lots of evidence to recreate the crime scene. As you read all 45 tips, consider each one a piece of evidence that you should remember. When the weight of the evidence is in your favor, do not be afraid to make the trade. As you trade, you will see the items presented in this chapter and it will be at that point when you truly begin to understand. There is no replacement for practice.

    Chapter 6

When trades go wrong it is in your best interest to assess what went wrong. Did you enter too early, too late? Did you misread the signs. Chapter 6 identifies what could go wrong and how you can correct it.

    Chapter 7

This is a final checklist from each chapter. It is a nice final summary or a location that you can use for a quick reference to double check that you didn't miss anything in your analysis.

    Final Summary:

This is a good selection as a first read if you are trying to get into technical trading. It is a book that can grow with you for some time, but you will eventually need to do further, deeper research on individual topics to really understand the tactics and become proficient. That said, you need a place to learn what you need to research and how it can help you, presenting the information in a concise manner. This book addresses this need, and I enjoyed the book. It's very approachable and easy to read, and should be under consideration if you are looking to get into technical trading or are looking for something to quickly remind you of what you should be doing!

Great education in the stock market
    By Chen Roth
This book introduces you to the paradigms of intelligent trading, to name a few:

    * money management
    * stop placement
    * support & resistance levels
    * recurring patterns of the market backed by statistical research
    * entry & exit timing
    * market trend & stock trend relationship

Having read a few books by this market veteran author, I find his books distinguished from the rest by a single, crucial aspect:

Thomas conducts and discusses his own research, methods and tools of many years, which he courteously shares with the reader both in his books and at his website (just google his name!)

Delighted by New Research-based Investing Information
    By Charlotte Hudgin
    Bulkowski’s Trading Basics review

Bulkowski’s Trading Basics is the FIRST investing book I have read that cleanly backs its statements with FACTS from the author’s ORIGINAL RESEARCH. I was excited to discover many ideas I have not found elsewhere. If you are a serious trader, you will be pleased to get your hands on the tables and charts in this book.

Do not let the title, Trading Basics, fool you. If you have never researched a stock, read a chart or placed a trade, there are plenty of good beginners’ books but this book is so much more. If a beginner asks how to make money in stocks, let them read the short chapter 1: Bulkowski’s personal story of “How to Retire at 36.” It will inspire and challenge them.

If you are serious investor, intent on always improving your stock investing with information that is research-based (and not a blind repeat of common “truths’”), then you will be surprised, delighted and probably shocked by some of the findings in this book.

After 13 years of trading, I am now in the process of incorporating a new layer of investing fact-based rules from this book into my investing plan.

A FEW OF THE MANY TOPICS BULKOWSKI COVERS I HAVE NOT FOUND ELSEWHERE:
    • How much money does it take to get started investing – guidelines and justifications for a safe starting investment for each type of investor (position, swing, trend or day traders)?
    • A unique position-sizing algorithm that takes into account volatility of both the stock and the market.
    • Managing a position based on both stock performance and market rend
    • What is the optimal period to hold a stock?
    • How many stocks should be held adjusted for trading style?
    • Analysis of how nine variations of stops (such as fixed percentage, volatility, chandelier, average true range, and top stop exit) perform including average loss, hold time, percent stopped out, win/loss percent and profit/risk change.
    • AND MY FAVORITE: a whole myth-busting chapter on the effectiveness (and ineffectiveness) of twelve types of support and resistance.
    • Each chapter ends with a CHAPTER CHECKLIST of key points and lessons to emphasize the most valuable information.

The book has many tables with the results of Bulkowski’s statistical research, extensively annotated charts of actual stocks showing the concepts in practice, and critical formulas every trader should know. If you are serious about making money in the stock market, buy this book.
