About the Author
Jack N. Rakove is Coe Professor of History and American Studies and professor (by courtesy) of political science at Stanford University. His scholarly work concentrates on the creation of a national policy in Revolutionary America, the problem of ascertaining the "original meaning" on the Constitution, and the political career and thinking of James Madison. His most recent book, Original Meanings: Politics and Ideas in the Making of the Constitution (1996), won the 1997 Pulitzer Prize in history. Rakove's other works include James Madison and the Creation of the American Republic (1990), Interpreting the Constitution: The Debate over Original Intent (1990), and The Beginnings of National Politics: An Interpretative History of the Continental Congress (1979). He contributes to numerous scholarly and legal journals and lectures both in the United States and abroad.

I bought this book because I needed it for some homework assignments in my History Class. The book was very insightful and easy to read. I personally learned alot about the history of rights and I think that this book should be used in more history classes.

Excellent collection

This is a fine collection of documents leading up to and through the American Revolution. It puts the issues in clear perspective from the people who were writing about them. Rakove's introductions are what you would expect from him: clear, articulate, reminding you of some things you maybe did know and telling you quite a few you didn't. An excellent mix of primary- and secondary-source information.

Sufism Debugged

Shams does not mince words. He is also an excellent teacher of exegesis (in his own special way). If he doesn't manage to get under your skin and push off the mask, then it is not for you. My softcover copy has survived a close encounter with a hard surface. Pay special attention then to who is his Master, after you make up. And note that there is a program for your instruction, should you care to follow it. If you don't fall in love with Sham after reading this book, then it is not for you. (And if this review is too cryptic, then it is not for you.)

Here's an extended quote, an entry entitled 'Those who possess the Kernet' (which is followed by the entry "Ali and Muhammad').

Begin quote:

The universe of Truth is an infinitely wide expanse. According to some, it is extremely clear and simple. For some it is very difficult, while according to some it is very easy--yet because of this easiness the remain bewildered. Those who speak about such things, hesitate here.

In the Hadith it has been said, "The Qur'an has seven levels of meaning of both the outer (zahir), the inner (batin), and the inner of the inner." Of these meanings, the scholars know the outer meanings, the saints know the inner meanings, and the prophets know the hidden meanings with the inner meanings, the fourth "none knows but God." So, how can the children of Adam benefit from this? There are many secrets within the hadith as there are in the Qur'an. As God Most High has said, "His heart did not deny what he saw .."[53.11]

They also hesitate to speak about the meaning of the subtle point, "What no eye has seen and no ear has heard."

An agnostic loves it

At one time I had what I thought was a passing interest in Sufism. I am an agnostic, but as such I think it is my duty to delve into and explore different faiths and spiritual traditions. (Saying you don't know doesn't mean you stop looking) This book made a "passing interest" into complete admiration for a spiritual tradition that is rich, witty, wild, exuberant, frustrating, insane, mystical, and Transcendent. I have heard Sufism called the zen Buddhism of the western tradition. I think that makes sense. But there is something about this book that speaks to me in a way that no other book has. I don't know why. But that's the way it goes.

Great book on what it takes to be an elite player

There are a lot of how to coach hockey books, drill books, etc. out there, but this is the first book I found that teaches the finer points of the game. It explains the difference between what good players do and what elite players do, and what skills a player needs to be an elite player. It also has a chapter on elite goaltending skills. It is a must for any coach who wants to understand the game better and teach their players to play at a highly competitive level. It is also good for highschool players who want to know what it takes to play at the college level.

this is a very useful book for players that want the skills to bring their game to the next level. Also a good guide for coaches or people trying to improve their kid's hockey ability.

Excellent Resource

This book is a must for both veteran coaches and those looking to become elite coaches at any level. Co-author Rand Pecknold has taken Quinnipiac University from a Div. III team with a total of six wins in his first year to a Div. I team currently ranked number one in the country for the third consecutive week. We can all learn from this coach's logical, systematic approach to the game - and thankfully the book presents these systems in a user-friendly format. Hey, if Pecknold can take a program that's practicing at 4:15am and 12pm in a local rink to building a rink seating 3,500 and selling out, I'm game for whatever the guy's putting out there for advice! Put this one in your "wood pile" and come back to it when you need to stoke your hockey fire.
