Good intro - understand the purpose

Good book - don't misunderstand the purpose of it.

This is a fine introduction to marketing with Facebook, but seems especially geared toward those who are new to FB, or who only use it for basic personal purposes. If that's you, it will be a helpful step-by-step tutorial to using FB's features to promote something. That's pretty much what the book claims.

But, the write up also stresses how profitable it will be even if you're a PRpro, etc. I disagree. If you're computer savvy, used to promotion, and you've spent much time at all on FB, you won't find much new here.

There are some good tips on using demographic tools, and developing communities. Some of the book is already obsolete, such as the section on creating a landing page for your business. FB has now done away with landing pages.

Great Demystification of Facebook For Me...

First, I have to say, I resisted FB for a long time, and once I realize I needed it for business ("free PR that can potentially reach millions--you're dumb to ignore it!"), I resigned myself and opened an account.

However, while I love Twitter and find it effortless and enjoyable, that was not the case with FB. Using it...enjoying it...has been quite a struggle because it seemed like such a jumble--messages from people I don't know who are somehow "friends"...the "job" of sharing things about myself out into the internet with...who knows who?...and so much distraction, apparently with minimal purpose.

Long way of saying, I was a good (though reluctant) candidate for this book. I don't "get" FB, but I accept that I need it and want to learn why people love it so much--and how so many use it so effectively.

So this was a book I'd either love or hate, and I'm glad to say the verdict is: "love". The authors start with the "basics" (which I still need), and learned about how the various features worked together, including how to add video, improve privacy settings, and then move into marketing (helpfully divided into beginning, intermediate and advanced).

Unlike Facebook itself (to me), this book is well structured, sequential and full of step-by-step instructions and practical tips and examples. I thought it was excellent--extremely helpful.

Best of a weak list

I bought the recent edition (published December 2011) of this text. I had borrowed a friend's copy of the 1994 edition and, though it is far from a modern, useful language text, it is better any of its competition. Imagine my surprise to find that my "new" edition differs from my friend's only in its cover, the addition of a new fly leaf page with the word Vietnamese misspelled and the reverse of the title page now includes 2012. The rest is absolutely identical. So don't go searching for the new edition if you are hoping for an updated version - the 1994 version has simply been reproduced in identical, rather boring black and white.

I have lived in VN for more than four years and work there as an English language teacher. I have found the language difficult to learn but keep trying as I need to remind myself of the difficulty of what I ask of my students to do every day. I don't have much of "an ear" for languages and don't know how anyone can be expected to learn spoken Vietnamese without the assistance of some audio input but this book comes with no tapes or CD. My friend used hers in a class with a native Vietnamese speaker as her teacher. A common problem with other texts with CDs is that the CDs have been made from old audiotapes and are impossible to start and stop as required.

One strength of this title is that the authors do understand that to use a language a learner needs to know individual words - most Vietnamese texts give idiomatic translations so a learner has difficulty knowing how to use the words in proper context. Another strength is that the lessons are reasonably well graded. And there are useful charts to show sentence and grammatical structures which use a range of interchangeable adjectives or pronouns - as a language teacher I found these very helpful.

But there are criticisms too. The main one is that the book's dialogues are set overseas and feature Vietnamese speaking to other Vietnamese in Australia or USA. It reads almost as if the dialogues were devised from texts to help Vietnamese people living overseas to learn English. I am not sure why, living in Hue as I do, I might want to speak in Vietnamese about San Diego or Los Angeles or Melbourne. And why would I want to say to another Australian: You're an Australian, aren't you? in Vietnamese - I would ask in English. The book does not focus on learning Vietnamese because you are living in Viet Nam - rather it provides an ex-pat Vietnamese view of the language.

A good modern Vietnamese language text is sorely needed. This is not it. But it is the best I have found during a long and futile search. The problems for me are: first, that the text reflects the Confucian learning methods so common in VN rather than the modern communicative language teaching used throughout the English speaking world; and second, that the focus is not on learning Vietnamese so that you can function better in Viet Nam.

disappointing text

I found this text rather disappointing. My Vietnamese teachers, who are both Northern and Southern, pointed many flaws in the dialogues, mixing formal and informal idioms which is inappropriate, the use of idioms that no one else apparently has ever heard of, and a failure to cover important basics. We used the text, but it was really the skill of the teachers that made it workable. This text appears to be supported by various organizations, but I am not sure why, quality does not appear to be the reason.
I have since discovered Ngo's text, which seems much better.

Gives You the Answer

Well, I can review this book by providing some descriptions as I did with Implementing Cisco IP Routing (ROUTE) Foundation Learning Guide: Foundation learning for the ROUTE 642-902 Exam (Self-Study Guide) and Implementing Cisco IP Switched Networks (SWITCH) Foundation Learning Guide: Foundation learning for SWITCH 642-813 (Self-Study Guide). If you interested, this book covers each topic with lots of details and, more importantly, many examples; provides number of commands and describe, how and when to use each one. And yes, significant lines are highlighted in commands outputs.

But I want to write something else.

"How to troubleshoot the network" is the Question that has no simple answer and maybe has no universal formula-like answer at all. (If you think otherwise, you should read this book.) Troubleshooting is not a science; it is a form of art. Of course, every protocol has define logic, every device (even malfunctioning) executes some algorithm, and even users activities can be described with good approximation. But, when you deal with big network, the scale, the number of factors, of interconnections, of hidden flows is so large, that it cannot be observed by human mind (with exception of several genius). So you when you find the solution, it is often a result of a feeling, not conclusion. And that is why I think that troubleshooting is an art.

So, how about this book? Does it teaches you this art, or it is a worthless piece of paper? Don't worry. This book will not simply teach you the art. It will make You the Artist. I am so sure about this, because after reading this book I have a feeling, that I know the Answer to unanswerable question. I know "How".

If you think that event-driven troubleshooting is nice and documentation is for all-forgetting-dummies, then you should read this book. If you already know what troubleshooting is, you should read this book too. It worth every cent, and I rate this item as 5-star just because of lack of better mark.

There is a lot of information in Cisco Press textbooks. However, I wouldn't rely solely on this book to pass the certification exams. There are also a few typos here and there, but that is to be expected since humans make mistakes.

I have read this book from cover to cover, every word, sentence, paragraph, section, and chapter.
This book is untrustworthy because, like the ROUTE book and the SWITCH book, it has far too many technical errors and grammatical errors.
Anyone who gives this book more than 1 star hasn't read it and doesn't care about their reputation.
I hope that Cisco doesn't write their IOSs, NX-OS, etc. like this.
For example; Chapter 8, page 271, Example 8-16: The syntax for the ACL is all wrong.
"...permit tcp host 209.165.201.5 eq bgp host 209.165.201.6".
This is trash!

Chris Juzwiak holds an M.A. in comparative literature from the University of California, Los Angeles. He has taught college-level English for more than twenty years and is currently chair of the Developmental Composition Program at Glendale Community College. Simple yet sophisticated.

This is a well thought out program for teaching writing. It is important to take a few minutes and read the instructor's introduction so one can fully understand the developmental process the program uses in teaching writing. I also found the YouTube videos informative. I wish there was a program for Middle School.

The first three books in the Blood Bowl saga.

Book One: BLOOD BOWL

Welcome to a twisted fantasy world where humans, elves, goblins, ogres and all other species work out their aggressions on the football field instead of the battlefield. It is called BLOOD BOWL! (Actually, the sport began under a different name, but everyone just began calling the sport after the most important match, Blood Bowl.) In this game, it is only cheating if you get caught or forget to bribe the referee (or the other team's bribe is higher). Murder happens in almost every game and only illegal in rare instances. In fact, murder and maiming is encouraged!

Dunkel "Dunk" Hoffnung grew up in Altdorf, the capital city of the Empire, in a privileged home. Things went down hill when his family fell from grace. Dunk's luck begins to change when a halfling, Slick Fullbelly, sees him bring down a chimera with a spear from a hundred paces. Turns out that Slick is a talent scout for the Bad Bay Hackers. It is not long before Dunk finds himself trying out for the position of back-up thrower. Dunk also comes face-to-face with his brother, Dirk. The brothers have not seen each other in over three years.

Dirk is now the Reikland Reavers' team captain. After three years on the Reavers' team, Dirk has become wealthy and famous. But the reunion is anything but sweet for the brothers. They must settle their differences, on and off the field. Once done, being brothers does not mean going easy on each other whenever they are on the field. Dirk's lovely teammate, Spinne Sch�nheit, almost succeeds in killing Dunk, even though she and Dunk had recently become lovers. And Dunk has made the tiny best friends list of a huge ogre named M'Grash K'Thragsh, his team's best blitzer. Good thing too, because in the game of Blood Bowl, anything goes!

***** Matt Forbeck's name will forever be linked to the game of Blood Bowl. In fact, this title (the first of a series) probably made the author's career. Personally, I am not a football fan, but I am now a die-hard Blood Bowl fanatic and can hardly wait to begin the next book of the series. I never dreamed a ball could have spikes or be hidden in chests that could explode in your face. This game is full of violent carnage, a lot of fun, and highly recommended! *****

Book Two: DEAD BALL

Dunk Hoffnung, with the Bad Bay Hackers, returns for a starring role in Book Two of the Blood Bowl Trilogy.

Without enough teammates to continue playing the sport of Blood Bowl, Coach Pegleg's team sets sail for Far Albion. Spike! Magazine sends reporter L�stiges Weibchen with them to make a documentary of anything special that may occur; after all, chaos just seems to follow this particular team around more than any other. Pegleg wants to hunt down the location of the legendary Far Albion Cup trophy and retrieve it in hopes that the myth surrounding it is true. The legend states that the team with this cup in its possession will be unbeatable.

Olsen Merlin (an elf) is a former team wizard of the Notting Knights. His own fate is linked with the Far Albion Cup, so of course Olsen steps forward to help the Hackers get the cup. While doing so, Dunk and the (few) teammates left run into trouble. Bandits, a diseased cult, and even a treeman (which are all but extinct) are just the beginning of the mess the legendary cup gets them into.

***** Not as many Blood Bowl games in this, the second book of the trilogy, than the first. However, author Matt Forbeck keeps things entertaining with his twisted imagination, funny dialogue, and lots of action. I can hardly wait to dive into the third installment. BRAVO! *****

Book Three: DEATH MATCH

The evil sorcerer, Schlechter Zauberer, has managed to steal the Chaos Cup from the current winning team. Unfortunately for the team members, they noticed the sorcerer and tried to stop him; thus the team exists no more. The huge Chaos Cup may be a trophy made from what appears to be skulls, but it is also so much more. By possessing it, Zauberer has unlimited dark magic. And Zauberer has plans of vengeance on Blood Bowl player Dunk Hoffnung (with the Bad Bay Hackers). To ensure no one kills Dunk before he does, Zauberer lets everyone knows that anyone that harms even a hair on Dunk's head will be immediately executed by black lightning. It does not take long to make everyone believe it either!

Captain Pegleg is thrilled by the easy touchdowns. The fans and advertisers are not. Since Pegleg will not allow Dunk to sit out of the games, Dunk does everything he can to make sure no one is stupid enough to get near him. (Because we all know that Pegleg makes sure Dunk has the ball constantly.) But it is all about to come to a head when Zauberer zaps the entire stadium of the final Blood Bowl game to the demonic realm. Dunk and the rest of the Bad Bay Hackers must play not only to win the championship, but also to keep the entire kingdom from the Blood God's grasp.

***** Author Matt Forbeck does an outstanding job bringing all his characters to vivid, breathing, heart beating life. This includes the undead characters! Listening to Bob Bifford (vampire) and Jim Johnson (ogre) narrating all the Blood Bowl games are some of the best sections of the entire trilogy. The sport of Blood Bowl has often been described as "nearly-organized chaos" by its many critics; they are right on target too. Here, in book three, readers learn all about the backgrounds of Dunk and Pegleg. The author throws in some surprising characters as well. Very highly recommended. *****

EXTRA NOTE: If you are wild about this trilogy as I am, then be sure to look for more. Book Four: RUMBLE IN THE JUNGLE is already out. (ISBN: 1844165175) A fifth and sixth book are due within the next year.
