The book also includes example programs which show how to apply these techniques to a variety of well-known models.

One of the best and up-to-date books in market

This book covers a wide range of applications in Statistical Mechanics, with clear explanation, examples, tips, algorithms, and explicit programs at the end of the book. It is good for beginners and experienced alike, since it discusses "classical" and modern algorithms. It is a must for those who want to make actual numerical calculations in Statistical Physics.

The best Monte Carlo book ever

This book is clearly written, well-organized and very user-friendly. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in Monte Carlo methods.

Unlike many other books that focus on its applications, this book spends the first three chapters on a thorough explanation of the mechanism: how Monte Carlo methods work, Markov chain, detailed balance, ergodicity, and on how to measure their efficiency. The book is clear and thorough as it makes sense to an average physics student. However, it may not be so rigorous from a mathematician's viewpoint.

I particular like this book for its down-to-earth style. When the authors talk about an algorithm, they give their self-contained C/C++ code (beautifully written programs), and explain underlying principles, technical details as well as common pitfalls (e.g., random number generators), which are all very helpful.

The topics in this book are clearly physics-based, with a focus on Ising model and other related models. Many important topics are covered: cluster move, renormalization method, entropic sampling, tempering, etc.

However, I kind of feel that the lattice models may not deserve so much attention. One reason the authors choose to do so is perhaps that these models are so simple and so much fun. On the other hand, applications to molecular systems are not mentioned at all (well, most people prefer molecular dynamics instead of Monte Carlo for molecular systems anyway). So I should say that an average person interested in chemistry and biology may prefer some other books, e.g., Frenkel's book. But what you get from this book is a deep and enjoyable understanding, and you may not care about applications too much at the end. I should also mention that the book uses some nice (kind of like plastic) papers, which may feel a little weird at first.

A practical book on Monte Carlo in Stat. Phy.

Overall, it's an excellent book on the practice of Monte Carlo and the c++ code in appendix are very instructive (Random Number Generators, Solid Monte Carlo Routines, etc.). It does have certain weaknesses though.

1) Sometimes the description are trivial in principle but written in great details. For example, on Pg 58 on the exact methods (so-called 'efficient way') of calculating averaged quantities from simulation.

2) Most of the content are heuristic. The discussion of the whole book is based on practice, although you do find something looks like a rigious proof (but no in fact). By rigious, I mean the proof should be based on Markov Chain and related properties of random process and statistical physics.

But as I said in the beginning, this is a invaluable book to anyone who wants to use Monte Carlo method in his/her domain. For myself, I am using this book as a reference to tackle functional optimization - Simulated Annealing, which is a very close sibling of Monte Carlo method.

Predictably Rational

A nice, readable overview of the role of incentives and their often unforeseen consequences. The overarching message is that when people don't behave as you would expect it is not because they are stupid but because they respond to incentives you may not completely understand. In pursuing this line of reasoning Harford takes to task those who (like Dan Ariely) claim that we are irrational and predictably so. The good news of this is that changing the incentives may change the behavior. The bad news is that in many cases incentives are very very hard to change (for example, when they have to do with genetic differences in reproductive strategies).

You can take all of my textbooks but please leave me this one

I teach product design and development at a major research university and I swear by this book. I often tell my students, "you can take every book from my office but leave me with this one." While it may not be the best or easiest introduction for younger students, e.g., first-year college students, it an excellent reference text that I have been using for nearly ten years. Kudos to Drs. Eppinger and Ulrich for their excellent work.

A history of America's best-kept secret

With a limited understanding of osteopathic medicine's roots, I set on a crash course to find an osteopathic medical history book similar to what a Kenneth Ludmerer's "Time to Heal" did for the history of medicine itself. And with Norman Gevitz's book, I was surely not disappointed. One would think that as a book recommended by the AOA and written by a osteopathic medical school professor, the book would be slanted. However, Gevitz does a great job at maintaining neutrality as a historian while demonstrating a certain degree of candidness, particularly about M.D./D.O. relations and the future of osteopathic medicine. Despite my ecstasy for this book, I do feel that there are certain portions of this book that can be further elaborated (reasoning behind the four-star rating). For example, I would like it if more material was included about osteopathic medicine between 1960 and today. Specifically, Gevitz seems to gloss over the political and social reverberations behind Henry Kissinger's monumental decision to admit D.O.s in the military as equals to M.D.s. Nevertheless, I thought the book was very well written and has definitely sparked an interest into one of this nation's best-kept secrets.

An Understanding of the Progress of Medicine in the U.S.

This book paints a picture on the birth and growth of osteopathic medicine in the United States. It illustrates the successes, disappointments, and the many trials that osteopathic medicine has endured since its inception. Additionally, it gives the reader an insight into the influence of the American Medical Association and M.D.'s in general. I think that this is a must read for future M.D.'s and D.O.'s alike because it provides a tremendously well written description of these physicians.

Exceptionally indepth view of the history of osteopathic medicine

I read this book within a week...I never read books that fast. Gevitz's writing style is highly accessible. There were a few chapters or sections where I started to glaze over only because the author explores the minute details of legislative and organizational changes within the American Osteopathic Association, the American Medical Association and other organizations that probably could've been summarized. But this doesn't really detract much from the overall strength and clarity that this book offers; along with an objective look at the history of osteopathic medicine.

Highly recommend for anyone interested in getting into a NoSQL or Mongo specifically.

I've really enjoyed this book. My favorite part by far is the tech comparison in the early chapters. The authors go over the pros and cons of MongoDB and describe the use cases for it, and it's competitors. The examples are all in Ruby, but are readable (even for a JS dev). I was up and running in ~5 minutes and followed along in each chapter. At about 1/3 of the way in, I felt I had a firm enough grasp to be able to implement it into my own project.

Coming from a relational (MySQL) background, the concept of a NoSQL DB was intriguing but took a bit of getting used to ("you don't have to design your schema up front?"). Storing and receiving data in a JSON-based format felt right at home after working with web frameworks and this book provides some great samples.

Aimed at experienced software developers, but good for MongoDB beginners and casual users, as well

This updated edition is aimed at software developers, but it doesn't ignore those of us who are more "casual" users of MongoDB. Indeed, this is an excellent book for newcomers to MongoDB, especially if you are patient and willing to read through an introductory chapter focusing on "MongoDB's history, design goals, and application use cases." Many people, of course, just want to jump straight into downloading software, running it, and playing with it for a while before getting down to serious stuff such as application use cases. So Appendix A is the place to go for getting MongoDB onto Linux, Mac, or Windows PCs. Then, once you have MongoDB installed, you can jump back to Chapter 2 to start learning how to use the JavaScript shell. After that, things start getting more "practical." For example, Chapter 3 introduces "Writing programs using MongoDB." Here, Ruby is used to work with the MongoDB API, but the author notes: "MongoDB, Inc. provides officially supported, Apache-licensed MongoDB drivers for all of the most popular programming languages. The driver examples in the book use Ruby, but the principles we’ll illustrate are universal and easily transferable to other drivers. Throughout the book we’ll illustrate most commands with the JavaScript shell, but examples of using MongoDB from within an application will be in Ruby."

I won't try to sum up everything in this well-written, 13-chapter book. I have used older, 2.X versions of MongoDB in MEAN stack applications. And, separately, I have worked a bit with Ruby and MongoDB. But in each case, I haven't needed to learn all that much about MongoDB itself, mainly just ensure that it is storing data that can be accessed in the right place and updated, saved or deleted as needed. So this book, written for 3.0.X (and later, as well as earlier) MongoDB releases is an eye-opener for me and one that I will keep around for reference and more learning now that I have upgraded to 3.2.

Part 1 of this 2nd edition "provides a broad, practical introduction to MongoDB." Part 2 offers "a deep exploration of MongoDB’s document data model." And Part 3 examines MongoDB "from the database administrator’s perspective. This means we’ll cover all the things you need to know about performance, deployments, fault tolerance, and scalability."

One cautionary note: The author points out that "as of MongoDB v3.0, 32-bit binaries will no longer be supported." Of course, some 3.X 32-bit binaries are still out there, and you can install them, but you will get a lot of warning messages from MongoDB. Download a 64-bit binary if your system will support it.

The author realizes that many readers who have some MongoDB experience will not read the book straight through but will jump around to chapters in many different orders and will even skip some chapters. And this is okay. MongoDB in Action: Second Editon is a book many of us will be happy to have handy whenever we need to get a better grip on some new aspect of working with this great open-source, document database.

Sometimes when you're driving, you see someone who is weaving in and out of traffic. He gets ahead of you sometimes and seems to disappear but you are later not surprised when you pull up next to him at a traffic light. The person driving that car is Mr. Mark Lim.
Mr. Lim seems to have invented a new way to stand still. More accurately he has invented a new way to walk slowly. You can walk slowly by simultaneously taking steps backwards and forward as long as the net steps forward are more, or you can simply do it by just walking slowly.
This book introduces a new trading method that reduces risk, while generating income. So how does it do it? Mr. Lim has come up with an innovated but more or less worthless trading mechanism which I will illustrate the gist of to you in the following example:

Let's say you initiate a long position in the SPY. You start with say 10 shares at $130. Every time the SPY drops by $2 you buy more shares at an increasing rate. So at $128 you will buy 20 shares and at $126 you will buy 30 and so on. You have to have enough capital to buy shares all the way down to zero. So your capital along with how aggressive you want to be will dictate how many shares you can buy and at what intervals. In this example you can never exit the SPY at a loss. You will simply stay in these positions and keep averaging down as the price drops. If you buy say 10 shares at $130 then you can sell them at $132. The ones you buy at $128 you can sell at $130 and so on.
Basically you are capturing the swings in the SPY while you never exit your long positions at a loss. You cannot use a stop loss as that would eventually deplete your capital. This approach does not attempt to make a directional bet and thus profit from capital appreciation, but it simply attempts to capture swings to generate income.

The concept is presented clearly and gives the impression that you would literally double and triple your money if you use this technique. But there is a very suspicious omission of performance data in this book. Why would Mr. Lim who is an academic and an aspiring professor not give examples of performance for his Vibratrading method?

If I tell you that I have developed a new trading strategy that makes money and reduces risk, what will be the first words out of your mouth to me? You will ask me, well, how much does this method yield? What's the return on capital? I will then say something BS like "well, it depends on you and it's different from case to case" you will then recognize that I am BS-ing you and tell me to pick an average case and present these numbers to you.
If I say "but there are so many variations to my method and it depends on the volatility of what you're trading" You will tell me that I need, at a minimum, to know the range of my performance. What is a low return on capital and what is a high return, and then we can take the middle to get some idea, but I should never, for any reason, get away with not providing this data. If I do, you need to run.

I have done the analysis myself on this ineffective trading method so I can give you an idea. If you invest in the SPY starting from February of 2011 till February of 2012 and capture the swings as we have discussed above at every $2 increments, you would have to have a capital of approximately $1,000,000 (to withstand going to zero) and 80 transactions later you will generate a profit of around $8,500.
That number is assuming your commission is $0! So what is that return on capital. Well, it is a whopping 0.85%!! Now why not just buy a bond and get say 5%?? Even if my calculations are doubled and then tripled that's still crap! Not to mention that the trading period I picked was ideal for Mr. Lim's trading method since it was a range bound year.
This book can easily deceive people into thinking that it is the best trading method ever. However, when you gauge the performance you will get the real story. Furthermore Mr. Lim talks like an academic and has a pressing need to complicate very simple concepts.
For example, instead of him telling you to simply sell or buy shares he felt the need to introduce the concept of securitization and monetization. He then explains that when you buy something you are securitizing it and when you sell it you are monetizing it.
He also keeps you waiting for 100 pages before he introduces this glorious trading strategy. There are 100 pages of terms and repetitions along with a marketing effort for all the cool terms that he has invented. Vibratrading, Micrososi, Macrosiro, Vibrahedging, Rangezoning, Short rider, Short scaler, Soft locking.... and more!
The author is a physics degree holder and feels the need to turn trading into thermodynamics 502.
You can even see this when he chooses to use terms like vibrations and oscillations as appose to just saying price swings. He desperately wants at least one of these terms to take off.

I am an engineer and I understand that it is sometimes fun to flex our muscles on business degree holders but this is a bit too much. Nevertheless, I have given this book two stars because it may be useful to a large institution in some way. Traders like me can learn a new approach but the overall benefit is low. Again the returns on capital are crap.

How about forex in vibratrading

Great book and great insights on a disciplined, structured approach that will take emotions out of trading decision and could over a long period of time and with the right amount of capital produce consistent returns.

Question for the author: How would you feel about applying vibratrading to Forex. Take a high volatility pair f.e. GBP/JPY. Set the zero level on both sides at a point where it is extremely unlikely that the currencies would appreciate/depreciate to. I.e. -80% + 80% of current levels. Setting interval of say 100 pips (which this pair crosses virtually every day). Set Capstone and Apex at current level. Using Microsiso from current levels starting it upward and downward. Trading microlots (1,000 units of currency) instead of full lots you would need total capital of about 40K to cover either a long or short full swings to the "Zero level". Some sort of profit would be produced almost daily adding up to potential returns of 5-15% per year on total capital and of course much greater on actual working capital. And this could be fully automated with an EA that does it for you. What am I missing other than the virtual risk (yet unlikely) that this pair excahange could explode one side or the other beyond the 80% limit?

It can be slow going, but well worth the effort.

I give this book 5 stars because it's a common sense approach that will make you regular income without risking the bank. It's not an easy read. The author is a physicist and thinks formulas and acronyms are the only way you can communicate. In my opinion he could have done a much better job explaining things. But still, it's a common sense break through. To get the most from the book you'll have to discard much of what the "experts" have taught you over the years and do some of your own thinking. Fact is you CANNOT predict the market with an dependability. The trading accounts of those who think you can are going bust every single day. Lim shows you a common sense approach that won't make you rich, but it'll make you a much better return than a CD. And you'll do it without risking the farm. Read it carefully and over again. I'm sure this book will be poo-pooed by the so-called experts, but it reinforces much of what I've learned thru experience over 25 years of trading.
