Language-learning gold mine!

Benny Lewis has done what the masses have been screaming at language-learning book publishers to do for ages, which is to construct a language-learning book that is fun, practical, and teaches you how to learn a language the way you learned your first language. Every language course I've ever taken before reading this book starts you off with learning simple phrases that are useful to know (the "Hi, how are you?" type phrases) and spark your interest in the language (you feel "pumped up", like you've already made some progress in your target language), but then the book goes off the deep end and immerses you into the complex world of grammar, verb conjugation, and a bunch of vocabulary words that you don't care about (just yet); vocabulary words are grouped into subjects, not by usefulness in everyday life, so by the end of the chapter you theoretically know how to say every kind of fruit or furniture, but can't construct a (useful) sentence using those new vocabulary words. With this kind of style of language learning, a hopeful student is quick to become exasperated, like they "just can't learn a new language", as the whole point of learning a language (for most people, I presume) is to be able to communicate with an increased number of people, not to know all the words. Furthermore, we see the spelling of words as we learn them, and maybe there are some pronunciation "guidelines", but these guidelines are no substitute for hearing the words spoken by a native speaker. This method of language learning is not how we learn our mother tongue - we don't learn it through conjugation charts and vocabulary lists, but by listening to how our parents (native speakers) speak and by testing the waters for ourselves. We pick up essential phrases, vocabulary when we need it, and learn through trial and error. This is the idea behind Benny Lewis's language-learning gold mine of a series - to teach us how to learn a language in a way that is fun and in the way we were meant to learn languages. And because most of us are unable to uproot and move to a new country for the sole purpose of learning a new language, this book contains links for audio tracks so you can start to fine-tune your ears to the sounds of your new language - and can start experimenting yourself! Practical, fun approach to learn French in order to speak it

I’ve been a fan of Benny Lewis’ approach to learning language for some time, so was glad to see him issue language-specific guides. Benny takes a very different approach from how schools teach languages. My school French courses emphasized grammar, vocabulary that wasn’t what I’d use in most of my conversations, and getting things right all the time. If you follow this approach, you’ll end up being able to read and write French (eventually), but good luck having a conversation with anyone, even after years of study.

Benny instead focuses on speaking from day one, regardless of how many mistakes you make, and using words and dialogue relevant to you. The course presents a lot of materials in the context of real-life scenarios, and makes you construct your own dialogues using not only words in the course but also words you look up that you would need for your own conversations.

The book is well laid out, with each unit containing a wide mix of material, including transcripts of the audios, helpful grammar hints, pronunciation hints, and exercises. I found some of the pronunciation hints particularly helpful, alerting me to nuances I had missed in other courses I’ve taken. The pictures, color and font make the book seem inviting and friendly, not a scary language textbook. You don’t get bored doing this work! You can listen to the related audio on an app you download to your phone. Once you’re downloaded the app’s files, you don’t need an Internet connection to listen, so you can use it when traveling, for example.

The scariest part of the course is recording and uploading videos of yourself speaking French. I didn’t like this at first, but in retrospect it was an enormous help. By listening to recordings of myself, I could better understand what I really sounded like and what I need to work on (in my case, my accent). That revelation alone made the course worthwhile.

Full disclosure: (1) I was part of a group that tested a beta version of the course. The final version is even better, as the book beats using printouts. (2) I am not a complete beginner, having done some other French study (even since my long gone school days). But it’s a testament to the quality of this course that in its early units I learned some things I didn’t already know.

So if you want to learn French to be able to speak it, instead of just dazzle people with your perfect verb conjugations, Benny’s course is a great way to go about it.

A Refreshing Change To Language Learning.

Language Hacking French is one of the best language learning courses I have ever tried. Like other courses, you learn to read and write, but the focus is definitely on speaking and listening, which is a refreshing change. The community surrounding this course is amazing, and Benny Lewis even makes himself available to answer any questions. I definitely hope they continue to produce more books in more languages.

Ah,yes, by the street of by and by,we'll arrive at the house of never."

This is one of thebetter episodes,in this long-running series...and that's saying a lot.
The storyline is rather simple.Fargo has contracted to lead a group of wealthy,priveledged Englishmen on a "trophy" hunt for buffalo.Though not the type of contract would normanly prefer;a fellow needs to earn a living.
Skye and his group are in Cheyenne country where Fargo knows there is a small herd of buffalo;but since he knows how sacred and essential;he knows it will incur the wrath of the Cheyenne if they attack "their" herd and essential food supply.
A couple of Englishmen,take it upon themselvesto defy Fargo and attempt to sneak off and get their trophy buffalo;the Cheyenne be dammed.
These two ,thinking they were killing a buffalo,killed a Cheyenne who was hiding under a buffalo robe as a blind.
This all leads to a lnon struggle of revenge. The writer goes into great detail about Cheyenne culture and beliefs.Also the writer fills each page with some of the greatest Old West expressions and descriptions that you'll ever find.On top of all that,there are some very interesting,well developed characters.One of these characters ,is a English hangman,built like a brute,and continually challenging Skye to a fight.De even threatens to kill Fargo andeven tries to kill him.
It is a page -turning tale with the outcome up in the air till the very end.

I have already read quite a few of the UMTS/WCDMA books on the market. This books does a superb job presenting the essential concepts of UMTS, without relying on complex equations to convey the information. The author is able to boil-up the technical details into very concise ideas, and express them clearly. There are plenty of diagrams and tables that help to illustrate the concepts.

Having already been knowledgeable about UMTS, I thought the book hit each important area with clarity: system architecture, protocol stack, air interface, signaling procedures, and services. While it does help to already be familiar with cellular communications, this book is an excellent place to start if you are new to UMTS. It's also a great high level overview for managers.

About the Author
Author Ronald Bacigal has served as a Professor of Law since 1971. He currently teaches at the University of Richmond. Mr. Bacigal received his B.A from Concord College and completed his law degree at Washington and Lee University. He was a Fulbright Scholar recipient to the University of Amsterdam. Mr. Bacigal is a Reporter of Criminal Case for the Virginia Court of Appeals and the Former Chair of Criminal Law Section of the Association of American Law School.

Professor Mary Kelly Tate teaches at the University of Richmond Law School, where she serves as Director of the Law School's Institute for Actual Innocence - an organization that works to identify and exonerate wrongfully convicted individuals in Virginia by pursuing writs of actual innocence and related post-conviction relief. Ms. Tate has also served as Assistant Public Defender in the Richmond Public Defender's Office. As an attorney in private practice, she has represented individuals in post-conviction capital and criminal litigation. She earned her B.A. from the University of Kansas and her J.D. from the University of Virginia School of Law. Ms. Tate clerked for Federal District Judge Robert R. Merhige, Jr. of the Eastern District of Virginia immediately after law school. She is a frequent speaker at national symposiums and she and her students are actively involved in public policy reform. In addition to this text, Ms. Tate has published articles in various scholarly and general publications.

Cases are good though to explain procedure and theory

The font is too small. The organization needs to be more fluid . The language is too archaic. Cases are good though to explain procedure and theory. However, as our instructor pointed out, much of the discussion is about sex. Really? Disappointing. Glad I have an instructor who has a career in teaching and not just an attorney, who can help us navigate this convoluted volume.
