There's a lot of useful information here. There's a lot of seemingly less-useful information as well (for example, very rudimentary charts that offer the simplest information on the US's trade relations with lots and lots of different countries). But it's basically free of the rah-rah pep talk stuff that often comes with this sort of guide book, and that makes it easier to read.

Excellent. For the past 15 years I have bought 2-3 copies per year to give to students on our medical missions to Ecuador or the Dominican Republic. And they have used it, and given me good reviews! This has a very good balance of what's needed on such trips. It's a large-format paperback though, and I wish the newer editions had remained the smaller size of the older ones for traveling purposes.

About the Author
WAYNE Bailey was born in Dublin where he still lives with his wife and daughter. A librarian by profession, Wayne has always had a passion for betting and trading and has spent various periods throughout his life as a professional gambler. In 2007, Wayne began writing for the official Betfair UK blog and was appointed editor of Betfair’s Irish blog from 2008 to 2010. An accredited Betfair trainer, he also spent some time working with the Betfair Education Team at various seminars and sporting events throughout the UK and Ireland. In 2007, he graduated from University College Dublin with a degree in social science and information studies and four years later, he completed a diploma in financial trading from the Irish Institute of Financial Trading. More recently, he studied psychology and the behaviour of the human mind. Wayne is a regular contributor to various newspapers and websites in the UK and Ireland, and he currently pens the Betting Ring column which enjoys a large dedicated following every Saturday in Ireland’s largest selling newspaper The Irish Independent. Wayne also runs a highly successful place laying service on www.waynebaileyracing.com which has provided a profit of over £5,000 to a £10 stake.

This is a horrible book by someone who never made it. You have spend an immense amount of hours writing it really offers nothing. Just lots of gibberish/common sense bulls***. Thinking small.

About the Author
Harry K. McEvoy, a long-time resident of Grand Rapids, Michigan, founded the Tru-Balance Knife Company there in 1949, and almost ever since has been the primary supplier of quality throwing-knives to professionals and sportsmen alike. He has coached and demonstrated knife and tomahawk throwing for more than thirty years and is the author of numerous books and articles on the subject.

Good read, good info and good history

Old school thrower, good information and I like the history and reading about the techniques they used. Yes, there are books more dedicated to techniques and How To but as a person who's been throwing knives and tomahawks I enjoyed this. Don't get me wrong, it does teach techniques. I think this is a good read for any thrower or somebody interested in throwing.

Disappointed

I know that this review may not be what some people want to read, but I just got the book a week ago and my impressions were not good. I have never gone through the trouble or expense of returning anything to Amazon, until this book. This book is old and outdated, it is not hard to tell. There are very few pictures, and a distorted sense of organization. Half of the pictures were drawings of irrelevant knives. I thought I would get detailed information about throwing, but most of the book is dedicated to famous knife throwers, and not to helping you learn. It is short and overpriced. A real let-down. I would look elsewhere for the information you wanted to get out of this book.

Thanks for not padding this book with extra words and chapters for the sake of stretching it out. There are a lot of take aways. I can get right to it without delay. It reminds of some things you have forgotten without burying you in hundreds of pages of fluff.

Learning new things is a challenge and a lot of fun too.. The book itself taught us how on what to do. As we all know that all of us are too occupied from our own daily routine that sometime, we neglect to take care of needs. From exercise, the food we eat...everything is there already! And one more thing....I enjoy the Lumosity :)

This is very short book but full with great tips on how to be smarter. You have to train your brain. There is no overnight solution to the question of how to be smart. Every person is different and will react differently to the many exercises that exist.

Chris Sells is a Program Manager for the Connected Systems Division at Microsoft. He's written several books, including the first edition of "Programming WPF", "Windows Forms 2.0 Programming" and "ATL Internals" (both Addison-Wesley). In his free time, Chris hosts various conferences and makes a pest of himself on Microsoft internal product team discussion lists. Ian Griffiths is an independent WPF consultant, developer, speaker and Pluralsight instructor and a widely recognized expert on the subject. He lives in London but can often be found on various developer mailing lists and newsgroups, where a popular sport is to see who can get him to write the longest email in reply to the shortest possible question. Ian maintains a popular blog at http://www.interact-sw.co.uk/iangblog/ and is co-author of "Windows Forms in a Nutshell" and of "Mastering Visual Studio .NET".

Good overview but details must be obtained elsewhere

A person learning C# programming like me needs a method to gather user input and show results to users; WPF is the obvious choice. This book provides a good overview of WPF and gets you started programming it. However, you will still have to make frequent reference to the Microsoft library documentation for details of the various classes. Also, many of the examples are advanced and presume you are just adding on WPF knowledge to a strong .NET probramming background. This makes the book of limited value to beginners.

Must have intro to Avalon programming

I was a technical reviewer for this book, and have been doing Avalon development at Microsoft since 2002. WPF (Avalon) is a huge platform, and you can easily get lost with all the classes and their uses without a good guide and lots of examples. This book provides both. If you are just learning Avalon, the book will focus you on what is important and put things into a context where you can start work immediately. But even if you have already "learned" the platform, this book makes a great reference for those parts of the API you don't hit every day.

In my review feedback to O'Reilly I summarized it thus: "Avalon is such a large complex platform, I long worried that people would find it hard or impossible to learn it. Chris and Ian have written a book that can get anyone up to speed rapidly, while not glossing over topics or leaving out essential technical details."

My favorite chapter is on data-binding. This is possibly the most powerful and innovative feature of WPF, and Chris tells a great story that explains both the how and the why of the technology. The weakest chapter is graphics (sorry, Ian). Graphics is approximately half the Avalon platform, and could easily make up a book in itself...one chapter is simply insufficient, though Ian still manages to get one started, and he has promised me the section will be expanded for the version that covers the final shipping Avalon.

Very Out Of Date

While Avalon aka Windows Presentation Framework is still in beta, I had hoped that the code examples and references in this book would not be far out of date. I am finding that they are dramatically out of date (writing this review 04/27/2006). This is not to criticize the quality of the book or of the content; it appears to be well written. However, it was written in September 2005, and there has been at least 3 new beta releases of the framework since then. About 1/2 of the examples I have tried will not even compile, or have bad runtime errors.

The "big concepts" are mostly unchanged. However, I cannot recommend this book to anyone. Programmer to programmer, you will be better off reading examples from online sources like msdn.microsoft.com and downloading new WPF tools like "Expression". This book will find you confused with broken examples fast. I look forward to an updated version when Avalon solidifies.
