In the past, geoscientists have noticed the occurrence of indium in a large variety of ore de� posits and detailed geochemical and mineralogical work is available for a few ex� amples. However, despite the current technological interest, there is no compre� hensive textbook that deals with all aspects of indium mineralization and economics. The present study attempts to develop a general metallogenic concept for indium in identifying the essential enrichment processes and their economic significance. The study 'Indium Geology, Mineralogy, and Economics' was commissioned and funded by the German Federal Institute for Geosciences and Natural Re� sources (BGR Hannover) and is a contribution to the research program 'BGR 2000 - Raw Materials with Short Lifetime Reserves'. This program focuses on raw materials with known reserves confined to the next 20-25 years at static de� mand. The future availability of reserves is usually estimated by dividing the known reserves by the current annual consumption. In fact, lifetimes of reserves are inappropriate measures because they depend on many parameters and there� fore represent a "snapshot" of a dynamic system. In order to provide a sustainable use of raw materials with short lifetime reserves, a significantly higher amount of innovation is needed compared to raw materials with long lifetime reserves.

This book would be helpful for any project in inorganic chemistry. Indium has many medicinal and industrial/petro-chemical utilizations. For instance, it is used in the manufacture of control rods. It was discovered spectroscopically in the mid 1860s by Heronymus Richter .
It melts at 157 C and boils at 2080 C with an atomic wt of
114.82. It is rarely , if ever, found in free form. Typically,
Indium is bound to sulfur according to In S3. It may be bound to
zinc (zn) blendes, tungsten, tin and iron ores. It may be utilized in conjunction with bearing alloys, semi-conductors and
medicinally. Specifically, Indium helps the body absorb and use
more of the other trace minerals . It is known that the levels
of copper and manganese in the kidneys are in direct proportion to the level of Indium. Generally, Indium exists in small amounts. It is insoluble and virtually non-existent in the food
chain. To be of use as a nutrient, Indium must be bound to a
sulfate to be water-soluble. Indium is being investigated for
its positive role in reducing cancerous tumors. Its positive effects are also seen in pain management, inflammatory disease
management & diabetes. Dietary supplementation is found in the
Indium-sulfate liquid drop method of ingestion. This book would be perfect for a class project in chemistry at virtually every
level in academe. The book has applications throughout industry,
academe and medicine. The subject matter of the research contained in this
work would require a considerable effort of time and expense to replicate. For this reason, the work has a unique value to a wide
constituency of people in the scientific community.

Indium - a solid reference work

This review is of a recently purchased new hard-cover version of Indium, by Schwarz-Schampera and Herzig. The book is a good reference work on Indium history, chemistry, geochemistry, metallogeny and occurrence and uses, through the publication date of 2002. It will be useful to geologists researching Indium and related ores, as well as resource experts looking for occurrence and abundance information. It lists many examples of indium occurrences and actual ore bodies with descriptions of the mineral assemblages, elemental ratios, alteration assemblages, gangue mineral associations as well as general geological settings.
There are very few typographical errors in the book, which is remarkable given the extensive use of technical and non-native English language terminology - the authors are to be commended for a fine compilation and distillation effort of much rather obscure information.
My one complaint is that the copy I received, although stating it is printed in Germany on several pages, also states that it is printed in the USA on the last page. It is a facsimile copy. The binding is very sturdy and well-done. The text is generally clean and sharp. However, several of the maps and other images, including the cover boards, are of low quality and nearly un-readable, apparently the result of a low-resolution scanning process. It is a pity the printer made this senseless decision.
At $160 USD, the book, in this printing version, is a poor value. I will keep my copy because I am actively using it in the pursuit of indium exploration projects. I would not recommend it to others at this price. Had I known it was a facsimile copy, I would not have purchased it.

Classic work from a Master

I.N. Muskhelishvili (with Kolosov and numerous colleagues, many of them in Tbilisi) developed and set the subject of complex variable methods applied to planar elastic problems on a firm mathematical footing in the early half of the 20th century. This excellent, authoritative and comprehensive work is organized as follows-

(1) Part I, chapters 1-3, pp 1-84 : Introduces stress, strain and the concept of the generalized Hooke's law for elasticity. This is fairly standard material, except that the more familiar Einstein summation convention is not used.

(2) Part II, chapters 4-7, pp 85-189: In chapter 4, planar approximations (plane stress and plane strain) are introduced. Chapter 5 introduces the concept of complex stress functions and the way they can be used to solve the bi-harmonic equation of planar elasticity. The strength of INM's work is its generality: multiply connected and infinite domains are also considered. The latter part of the chapter deals with questions of uniqueness and regularity of solutions. Chapter 6 is a brief but excellent introduction to the meaning of multi-valued displacements and elastic dislocations. Chapter 7 introduces the conformal transform for the Kolosov-Muskhelishvili equations.

(3) Part III, chapters 8-11, pp 190-256: Chapter 8 introduces the complex fourier series. Chapter 9 uses this technique to solve the first and second boundary value problems (specified traction and specified displacement respectively) for a disk and its complementary region (infinite plane with a hole). After solving the problems in generality, special cases where the potential functions have only a finite number of terms in expansion are considered. Chapter 10 tackles the ring in a similar way. Chapter 11 demonstrates elementary applications of conformal mapping.

(4) Part IV, chapters 12-13, pp 257-306: These two chapters provide a quick introduction to Cauchy integrals and boundary values of complex functions. Entire texts have been written on the subject, but the material contained here is adequate for the rest of this work.

(5) Part V, chapters 14-17, pp. 307-434: In this part, the reader will begin to appreciate the power of the complex variable approach. The organization is similar to Part III, i.e. problems are solved in great generality first and specific examples of interest considered subsequently. In the examples one may find such classic problems as the stretching of an infinite plate with an elliptic hole in addition to less common ones such as an arbitrary number of concentrated forces acting at interior points of a disk. The problem of an elliptic inclusion is also considered. Chapter 16 tackles half-plane problems and also the (rarer) case of a general semi-infinite region. Chapter 17 briefly considers numerous generalizations (multiply connected regions, mixed boundary value problems)

(6) Part VI, chapters 18-20, pp. 435-563: Chapter 18 introduces the Riemann Boundary Value Problem (called the 'Hilbert Problem' by INM) for finding a sectionally holomorphic function that satisfies a given 'jump' at the boundary. This elegant and powerful theory is then applied to solve numerous important problems for the half-plane (chapter 19). In the examples, the reader will encounter classic mixed boundary-value problems e.g. contact of a punch and a half-plane and crack-problems (infinite plane with straight cuts). Chapter 20 applies the BVP technique to regions with a circular boundary. Chapter 21 extends this to the case where the region of interest maps conformally to a circle.

(7) Part VII, chapters 22-25, pp. 564-661: This is a quite distinct part of the book and it considers torsion and bending of bars, both homogeneous and compound. The classic St. Venant problem is considered and the examples are at least mathematically fascinating (torsion of a Booth's lemniscate sectioned rod?)

(8) 3 useful appendices and numerous references. Unfortunately, many of the historic works referred here (by Magnaradze, Savin, Sherman, Shtaerman, Vekua) are in 30s-50s era Soviet journals and not available in translation.

The book was translated by Prof. J.R.M Radok (himself an elastician of repute) and the translation is generally excellent with very few errors.

It is unfortunate is that this beautiful work is being sold at an exorbitant price (> $200). This makes it prohibitively expensive for graduate students. One hopes that Kluwer academic will consider the value of this text and the importance of its wide availability and lower the price.

A masterpiece

For those who are involved in any way with the mathematical theory of 2-D elasticity, this book is really a must have. Though the first edition goes back to 1949 (English edition by Noordhoff Ltd in 1953), it still contains everything that is known in this field. It actually employs the theory of holomorphic functions, Cauchy integrals and conformal mapping in order to solve the various boundary value problems met in plane elasticity. It is almost self contained as far as it concerns its mathematical background. Its results can be used to treat numerous applications of practical interst, such as cracks, inclusions, holes, contact problems, etc. Its a pitty it is out of print (or in print-on-demand only). It can be used along with the same author's "Singular Integral Equations" (another masterpiece on the subject) and Gakhov's:"Boundary Value Problems". Basic knowledge of complex analysis is a prerequisite. It covers 700 pages, contents are: 1. Analysis of stress 2. Analysis of strain 3. Basic Equations 4. The Bible of Liquid-Based Coating

This is an excellent text for anyone who wants to take a deep dive into the fluid mechanics and mechanical technologies that govern modern coating processes. The text begins with rigorous definitions of fluid flow (Navier-Stokes, Cauchy Momentum, etc) and gradually relates the mathematics to the coating processes as a whole as the books goes on. The math is pretty intense in the beginning with an abundance of vector and tensor calculus. Without some level of familiarity with these concepts, the reader won't get the most out of this text. When deriving the process models later in the book, the authors do a good job of pointing out the weaknesses of each model and the caution that must be used when applying them. The book does a very nice job of relating critical operating conditions with dimensionless parameters common in fluid mechanics (IE: Reynolds Number) to outline a wide variety of observed behaviors in a steady-state coating process.

The are only a few things that I dislike about the book. One is the lack of diagrams in some of the more application-based sections, which makes following the line by line derivations for the coating model somewhat difficult. The notation is not always present in the section where the proofs are derived but it is usually located at the end of the section or chapter. The technologies section is nowadays a bit obsolete with some of the listed technologies only in niche use now. Still, a nice overview is provided of each technology the book examines.

As a whole the text is a must-have for anyone who wants a deep understanding of the liquid-based phenomena of the coating process. Scientists and Engineers within the industry would benefit tremendously from even reviewing only a few sections.

The seminal work in the field

Most of the books in the field are out of print (Coating Equipment and Processes and Coating and laminating machines: A guide to the design, selection, and usage of coating and laminating machinesare two of the classics but they are very technological. Modern Coating and Drying Technology (Advances in Interfacial Engineering Series)is more scientific than the earlier works, but this book really reviews the science as well as the technology. The chapter on rheology is more geared to paints than continuous web coating and a few of the chapters are nearly obsolete (e.g., slide coating has become a niche technology with the demise of silver halide photography), but it is unlikely that this book will ever be equalled much less surpassed. If you want to understand coating, this book is a must.

It's a Boy Scout manual with a couple weapons' overviews and the words "zombie" and "undead" sprinkled here and there. Its illustrations are futile attempts at humor (apparently the undead like to make graffiti?). Its subject matter isn't even the horrific Romero or Brooksian zombies. No, they use the campy, comedic relief "Braaaaains" zombies. And even then, as I said, most of the book doesn't even cover how to deal with them!

Terrible book desperately attempting to grasp onto the success of Max Brook's far superior Zombie Survival Guide and the recent resurgence zombie fandom as a result of said book. Avoid this like the undead plague.

Seems like it is missing something

If you ever read Max Brooks' Zombie Survival Guide, then you would have the basic idea of what this book is about.

The book is written on the grounds that you are a US Army solider. In the beginning you swear an oath that you will do what you have to do.

The book is divided up into many sections. Mostly related on the grounds of first aid, survival, weapon training, evasion, defense, offense, and so on.

I could see many potential of this book, but I think it somehow fails to deliver. The reason I think it fails to deliver is because the book attempts to explain real life training, but push in "zombie" stuff. For example, in the weapons section of the book, it explains about the M9, M4, M16, etc. It goes on to explain the fire rate, the capacity, and so on. Then to make it "zombie" it just paints a picture of a zombie on it. In other sections it explains about camouflage, but to add that "zombie" effect, it just says, "Be sure to stay hidden from zombies." There is one section about target practice, and it shows a score card, but to make it a "zombie," the author just painted zombies all over the card. Then in First Aid sections, it explains about how to carry people, and so on, but to add that "zombie" feeling, the diagrams just show soldiers with "Brainz" written on their helmets or they show diagrams of proper first aid, but put an obvious zombie bite to simulate injuries. I mean it's sort of like taking a Dodge, then putting a Ford sticker on it, then talking about how great Dodges are. I felt the author picked up a copy of an actual US Army manual, then to turn it into a zombie knock off, the author just added in some pictures of zombies, add some stuff about zombies between the paragraphs, then shipped it out. The zombie theme of the book felt more forced than just funny.

Zombie is just a word in this book.

If you are looking for anything zombie related, this book is not for you. It's essentially a combat manual (or combat manual like) book with the word zombie thrown in periodically. For example, it explains how to choose a machine gun emplacement from within a house and it tells you to avoid obvious windows and doors because it will be under surveillance from the enemy. The enemy are supposed to be zombies!!! They don't observe machine guns! The author doesn't even really TRY to make an imaginary attempt at a zombie threat with modified tactics to fit.

Even the illustrations don't make much sense. They show soldiers checking zombie bodies for life by sticking their fingers in the bodies mouth and performing CPR on OBVIOUSLY ILLUSTRATED ZOMBIES!

All in all HORRIBLE and out right INSULTING if you are looking for a zombie book.

The cover a couple of pages in the front and back fell off. As much as I tried to keep the front connected to the book, it kept falling off and I misplaced the first few pages, which is obvious upon receipt of the book. Book is ok. Was listed as acceptable condition, but when it arrived half of the spine was missing and a few pages were not binded. As I use the book it is continuing, a slight annoyance.

Victor has written an exceptional work here!

Grandmaster Victor Mikhalevski is a well-respected expert on the opening who regularly writes the 1.e4 column for ChessPublishing and has now published a book through Quality Chess. The book has received excellent reviews from chess professionals, and it provides extensive and innovative coverage of a very old, very solid chess opening. Mikhalevski concludes that the Open Spanish is not sufficient for equality in the main lines, which is a very honest assessment for the author of a book for the second player.

However, he also concludes that the endgames are inside the drawing range, so if you want to be able to draw and still have plenty of winning chances should your opponent go wrong, this is a good opening choice for you. It is unreasonable to expect a Black opening to fight for the win without allowing White to do the same. The Open Spanish gives Black a chance to fight for the win if White takes the risks, but if both players play it safe a draw is the correct result.

There is extensive coverage of many novelties and the known literature is well-perused by GM Mikhalevski.

Overall I would highly recommend this book.

The Open (?) Spanish

I was disappointed in the book. The first six of the 19 chapters in the book covered lines other than the Open Spanish. Chapters 6 through 9 covered rare and seldom played lines. On the other hand, many of the main lines of the Open Spanish were not covered at all.
