About the Author

HARLOW C. LANDPHAIR is Professor of Landscape Architecture at Texas A&M University and author of Site Reconnaissance and Engineering (Prentice Hall, 1985). He holds a Doctor of Environmental Design (DED) from Texas A&M and is also a Research Scientist and head of the Environmental Management Program for the Texas Transportation Institute at Texas A&M. His current research is in erosion control materials and in methods and design implementation technology.

Don't buy it new!

It is unbelievable that this book is $80. I agree with the other reviewers that this book falls short of what a professional reference should be, and the typos are plentiful. For the money, Time Saver Standards is a much better buy.

Unfortunately, there are not a lot of other good options for a construction reference at the time being, so if you run across a cheaper copy of this book it still might be worth picking up. Though none of the topics are treated with great depth, it does manage to get the ideas across and could be helpful for someone just entering the profession or needing a general refresher.

This book is just a very basic overview of construction, and other supplemental references about the topics covered would definitely be a must.

Poor Execution
By - seeking higher standards
Without a doubt, this is the worst edited publication I have ever read. While the information contained in this book is valuable, the editorial missteps and omissions are maddeningly distracting. Some examples include sentences that don't finish with periods, formulas with typos, poorly reproduced graphics, mathematical errors (in the examples!), objects omitted from sentences, and a contour map that requires a mirror to decipher (figure 3-5). As a teaching tool, this text inspires confussion and frustration rather than delivering clarity and instruction. A 4th edition might correct the many errors, but this edition is far too expensive for it's lack of professionalism.

The only one of its kind, unfortunately

I know one of the authors; he was actually a professor of mine before he retired. I know that he knows his stuff, so I'm praying that this mess of a book is the fault of the publisher.

The typos alone make this text incomprehensible. Add to that illegible diagrams and a complete disorganization between text and headings, and you end up with headaches from just trying to read this silly thing. Unfortunately, this text is the only one of its kind, as far as I can tell.

This book is meant as a comprehensive landscape architecture construction text for students and professionals and covers everything from grading to irrigation to structural load, although not deeply enough to be your only reference.

One wouldn't imagine that Siku, onetime artist for postmodern bloodfest Judge Dredd, would be the ideal choice for a manga-style graphic novel adaptation of the Bible, but not many pages have passed before it becomes clear that the Bible is, in fact, the perfect material for him. This audacious little book doesn't make much effort to be authoritative and include every last Old Testament begatting or bloody massacre. Instead Siku presents jazzy and irreverent riffs on the good book, leaping brazenly over whole reams of material and scattering behind numerous Want to Know More tags directing readers to more explanatory chapter and verse. The action is breezy and flip, drawn in a sharp and Anglicized manga style. The dialogue is not just laced with humorously incongruous Britishisms (My maths has never been very good!) but with slangy passages worthy of the CW Network (Cain to Abel, Whassup, bro?). Although the book (already a hit in the U.K.) is being released via Doubleday's Galilee imprint and is clearly targeted at youthful believers, it makes little attempt to sanitize the grottier aspects of the source material, as witnessed in the scene where a crowd of Sodom's citizens bellow, Bring out those men so that we can rape them! Grade 10 Up–British cartoonist and theology student Siku, perhaps best known for his work on Judge Dredd, offers a concise, well-staged, and fulsome take on the Bible. Because of the character-driven nature of his art, the accounts tend toward the best story pieces, with lots of Genesis included (Adam and Eve, Cain and Abel, Abraham and Sarah, and more), as well as stories from other Old Testament books such as Joshua and Ruth, through which readers can become acquainted with the individuals. The New Testament collapses many books into a couple of sections but includes several of Jesus's parables and ends with a surprise twist on the Book of Revelation. While costuming tends toward a kind of storied old Middle East (and women's forms are visible but always clothed), an occasional story line will have some updated visual metaphor attached to it: a mid-20th-century crime boss or a nuclear warhead, for instance. Each story includes a marginal tab directing readers to the book, chapter, and verse where a more traditional account can be found in the Bible. Accessible, respectful, and creative, this is an excellent resource both for manga-loving teens who are familiar with The Book and for teens who have no familiarity with the traditional text and are looking for an engaging overview.–Francisca Goldsmith, Berkeley Public Library, CA

About the Author
SIKU is one of Britain's leading comic book creator/conceptualists, having worked for 2000AD; producing titles such as 'Judge Dredd,' 'Slaine' and a strip he co-created called 'Pan-African Judges'. He has also worked for Marvel UK and COM X and has been credited on a number of computer games, such as Evil Genius. More recently, he has been developing concept work for TV commercials and producing freelance work for Nicklelodeon IP and promos.
Siku's works are published in several books like Images 22--the best of British Illustration and Digital Art Masters. He also appeared on TV doing interviews for ITV's The London Programme, Channel 4's The Big Breakfast and More 4 News, Channel 5's Chris Moyle's Show and BBC's Heaven and Earth.
He studied at Yaba's School of Art, Design and Printing and the London School of Theology.

A Dramatic New Vision of the Bible in Manga Form

Even though this is a thick manga-style graphic novel, obviously its not the whole Bible -- nor is it the only possible interpretation of the Bible's sacred text. So, with those potential assumptions set aside, you're likely to really enjoy this vivid "take" on the Bible's highlights.

Research into Americans' Bible-reading habits has shown repeatedly that Americans love to own Bibles -- often more than one. The problem is that we frequently can't find time to read our Bibles, or we get stuck in a rut of a single version or two. Even if we love the Bible and read it regularly, most of us are always looking for fresh ways to re-envision these powerful, timeless stories.

When I first got my copy of this book, opened the first page of Genesis -- I was lost for the next couple of hours!

Plus, I like the chapter-and-verse references sprinkled through the book -- so readers can check out the full version of the stories in the Bible itself.

great, but one concern

first of all, I love this book. it turned out to be more than I was expecting. the art is great even in black and white. I like how the author included references to the stories in the bible to expand the readers understanding of the stories. for the most part I feel that the biblical account was treated very respectfully with this being am attempt to put a new perspective on it.
the only real concern I have is a few instances of nudity. I completly understand that the bible deals with some pretty heavy stuff, specifically speaking of the old testament right now. there are stories of adultery and other things and there are no punches pulled, no attempt to sanitize it. that's what a truthful witness (thw bible) does. with that said, I feel that the author didn't need to show certain images so graphically, especially if this is geared toward younger readers. even if its meant for older kids the younger ones will still pick it up. specifically the stories of adam and eve (of course), ruth, and especially david and bathsheeba. I think the points could have been made in a less edgy way. now I don't feel like the images were meant to stimulate, but depending on who is reading, you never know, especially with younger kids. so parents be warned about that. I was able to "edit" my copy to lessen the impact a little, so that's an option.
otherwise I love how the book flows and it is great as a supplementary reader. I sometimes have a very hard time reading especially long passages or those very involved sentences in pauls letters. Having a picture in my mind really helps me keep track of my thoughts. this book is great for that. there are lots of books passed over, but I understand that.
another thing I like is how the gospels are combined into one narrative with a few parables of Jesus inserted in strategic places.
overall, I really love this adaptation and enjoy reading it.

Easily the Best Illustrated/Comic Bible

First, I should say I couldn't care less about the art - it could be stick figures for all I care. Telling the story and stories effectively and accurately are what is important. This is the Word of God, right? Everyone raves about "The Action Bible" which is boring and, surely, makes every one who reads it never want to read The Bible again. The Manga Bible, on the other hand, seems to have been written by someone who cares far more about the material and what it means than most of the useless and downright painful literature of faith available.

Great Information

This book is not for beginners but has a real depth of knowledge. Not many step by step instructions, but if you already have a base of bushcraft or primitive skills there are lots of nuggets in here to inspire you. The chapter on making bone blades and tool points was very useful to me. Great atlatl info also. Get into the woods and experiment!

Curious about primitive technology?

If you are curious about what primitive technology is about this book will give you a good introduction. Lots of cool drawings and pics but don't expect step by step, hand held instructions for the multitude of topics covered in this compilation. If you don't know much about this stuff then some vocabulary may be new to you such as atlatls, celt, haft, biface, pecking and the list goes on. It was new for me but I found that my interests grew deeper and soon found myself buying books on flintknapping (did I have money for that...?) which I knew next to nothing about not too long ago. Inspirational in so many regards with some reasonable instruction from pics and words combined but I think these articles were intended for those with some background in the subject. Many short articles with great tidbits for the outdoorsman. A taste of this and a flavor of that by leading authorities whose expertise is compiled into one book. I recommend it highly not only for the curious but the outdoorsman, survivalist and tinkerer! I love that little knife in the middle foreground on the cover!

Wow! Wicked: Devils Point Wolves by Eliza Gayle is her second offering in the amazing new Mating Season Collection. Each release is a standalone novella featuring a separate couple and comes complete with their own happiy ever after ending. The dialog is well written, the characters are irresistibly sexy and the story is wild and wicked! In Book One, Wild, we met beautiful twins, Rebel and Faith Harris. Faith travelled to the island of Devils Point to find her sister after Rebel went incommunicado for several days. Rebel works as a stripper at Club Diablo which is owned by handsome werewolf brothers, Damien, Dante and Diego. On her arrival, Faith was attacked and bitten by a rogue werewolf and is now a newly turned wolf herself and coincidentally, just happened to be Dante's true mate. Oh my! Now in Book Two, Rebel won't be satisfied until the rogue wolf is captured and punished and she's determined to be the bait, then she can leave the island and forget all about sexy Dante and the fact that she isn't his one true mate. Unfortunately, Dante won't be happy until he captures Rebel and she becomes his mate. Oh my! The mating moon is shining bright! Will Rebel be able to resist??? I wonder??? No spoilers from me but I will say this.... Beautiful, brave and very stubborn bombshell stripper determined to catch a rogue wolf-check! Handsome, sexy, alpha wolf hell bent on capturing a rebel-check! Danger, drama, a rogue werewolf and a hunter on the loose-check! Heated attraction, fiery passion, sweet romance, steamy sex and a mating moon-you bet! That and a whole lot more! Fabulous entertainment and an awesome read!

The cover is steamy and beautiful :) I love it and the wolf is gorgeous :)

This is the 2nd book in the series and part of the Mating Season collection. I’m not sure what the author’s recommendation is, but I highly recommend reading the books in order because you will be missing things and character dynamics if you don’t read book one first :) This is an adult series due to the steamy content :)

I really liked the story. This one is about Rebel (Faith’s sister) and Dante (Damien’s brother). Faith and Damien are still my favorites though :) There is plenty of action, drama, and bullets to be thoroughly entertained :) I love Eliza’s writing because I never have to go back to re-read something because I got confused. Her writing uploads images right to your brain and weaves into a fabulous story.

I really like all of the stories in the Mating Season Collection that I have read so far. I recommend this collection to any wolf shifter lover because you will find something to enjoy :)

Mating Moon part 2

This is the second novella in a trilogy featuring the shifters of Devils Point. While technically this can be read as a stand alone it is definitely better to have read the first one. In this book we see more of Rebel and Dante who are trying to hunt the shifter that bit Rebel's twin sister in the last book. They are also both battling their feelings for one another because while Dante is attracted to Rebel, he doesn't think she is his True Mate. With sparks this hot between Rebel and Dante, I can't imagine what they would be like if they were "True Mates!"
This was a great read, with some very steamy scenes, I look forward to seeing Diego's fall in the next installment.

Interesting poses but would like to see more models

I happen to like the fact these are in black and white, since the simplicity of it makes you familiar with the form. I already have The Nude Figure for my other references for life drawing. As another person said, this is not the best book to get reference for illustrative foreshortening. This book is more to train your eye to capture various parts of the form in foreshortening.

I thought it was interesting how the author noted that it was difficult these days to find models because of people's need to do body alternations like piercings and tattoos.

While I find the models average, I would have liked to seen a few different models like overweight or even more athletic to get variations of the form in perspective. I wouldn't even mind old people, but I'm not sure if the elderly could perform in some of those poses.

Most of the poses are in seated or lying down positions, I remember the author saying also that a lot of poses even in perspective started looking the same.

I got some use out of the book, for the photography was clear enough for me. I also like using it as an exercise to recognize the form, like certain muscle and bone groups would look like in certain perspectives. I think too many people want to copy and not understand the true value of learning and utilizing reference.

It's not an AMAZING book, but it's still useful.

Truth in advertising

I saw a copy of this book for all of about 5 minutes before I
knew this was it for demonstrating foreshortening in figure drawing.
I have not had much time to spend with the book in the interim, but I
fully believe it will stand up to it's promise.

J. R. Spencer is a noted concert classical and jazz pianist, vocalist, music coach and artist developer and published musicologist.

Currently residing in Southern California, he is the founder of Spencer Music and Artist Development currently coaching students of all ages and levels privately in: piano, digital keyboards, harpsichord, kindermusik, voice, vocal pathology, acting, strings, music theory/composition,s songwriting and music therapy.

As a sought after music industry artist developer, many of his artists are featured recording artists and songwriters, in local and international musicals/operas, and on television and film.

J. R. received both a Master and Bachelor of Music in keyboard collaborative arts with joint emphasis in piano and vocal performance from California State University, Fullerton graduating with the keyboard areas' highest honors. He holds an Associate of Arts degree from Orange Coast College, located in Costa Mesa California.

For the past five years I have operated the julielondon.org web site. The site collects everything in the public domain about this lovely singer-actress. Author Jim Spencer called me several month back, asking to use content from my site for his upcoming book. I said sure. He's pulled lots of good Julie London information from the site.

I think Jim's book and my website compliment one another well. In 1494 abbot Johannes Trithemius of the Benedictine monastery in Sponheim, Germany was in the illuminated manuscript business, with his abbey full of monks. Fearing the coming revolution from the new-fangled movable type developed by Gutenberg, he wrote a book that translates as, In Praise of Scribes, which tried to stave off the collapse of the hand-written book monopoly. Interestingly, he had his book printed with movable type so EVERYBODY could read it. Lady Liberty and julielondon.org are not a direct analogy, but one medium can be used to support the other.

Web site or Lady Liberty? The correct answer for you may be both. First of all if you weren't a bibliophile, you wouldn't be reading this on Amazon.com now would you. Lady Liberty is a handsome addition to your collection. It's easy to find information and leaf through the 300 color pages. The book has information you won't find elsewhere. The web site can have more information such as mp3 files to listen to Julie's music and videos of her performing as well. I add new material weekly, so the internet has a more dynamic component which a printed book is not going to have.

Some people such, as my wife for one, would never read an ebook in her life, yet she has no trouble reading all sorts news online. To get at information on the web site, you have to `dig' through several pages to get to your objective. That takes time and some effort.

Jim's a musician and the focus of his attention clearly is the musical and recording aspects of Julie's body of work. The author has done a wonderful job of organizing Julie's music so you can easily find the information you want. It is a very attractive coffee table book and a joy to look through.

Having owned a printing company for over 20 years, I know what books like this can cost and Lady Liberty is priced as a bargain. The project clearly represents a labor of love on both our parts. I think you will enjoy the end result.

This was nice for fans of Julie London but it only reflects what is on her website in a nice hard copy,but it is a nice start.Further books are needed to flesh out her life and career.

James D. Halderman brings a world of experience, knowledge and talent to his work. His automotive service experience includes working as a flat-rate dealership technician, a business owner and a professor of automotive technology at a leading U.S. community college for more than 20 years.

He has a Bachelor of Science Degree from Ohio Northern University and a Master's Degree in Education from Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. Jim also holds a U.S. Patent for an electronic transmission control device used throughout the United States and Canada.

In addition to the numerous automotive technology textbooks he authored for Pearson Jim also writes a weekly newspaper column on automotive service for the Dayton (Ohio) Daily News.

Great book but no cd use

I bought this book thinking it came with a cd/access code full of usefull information and videos. Unfortunatly you can only use the disk or access code if you are in a class that gives you a class code. Which means all those useful test, videos, useful information, ect you cant use. The book itself is very good and informative. It is very clear and has great pictures.

HEAVY

I received this textbook and was shocked at the weight of the package. I thought it must be a pack deal of a book (a manual for lab and a manual textbook) but was very wrong. This book is near four inches thick and weighs 10lbs. The weight is burdensome. The content however makes up for it. Looking through the contents you have everything included that you would need for MULTIPLE automotive courses. Where was this textbook 7 years ago when I began college???? It covers braking systems, electrical systems, suspension, steering, (touches on) hybrid vehicles, and more! This takes up for the 4 books I had to use for several courses. For that reason it's worth it's weight! Plus had it been around I would have saved some money; cheaper to buy this than the several other textbooks required at the time.

Prepares acceptably for ASE Exams

For students without experience this book is great. There may be some negative reviews regarding this text however I have never been under the hood of a car, working professionally, before I started an apprenticeship program and this book has greatly assisted in my studies. If you want to learn more about vehicles as a DIYer and have the patience and discipline to read the book and not just specific chapters then you will ultimately have a far better understanding of vehicle repair. This text does not encompass everything about vehicle repair but it does a significantly exceptional job regarding informing students about automotive systems. I also can say I have used the text to prepare myself for ASE exams with successful results. As ONE text in an education program this is a great foundation.
